Using the right verbs in different tenses…  We usually do not have to think about using the right verb. We would not say…  “She leave the daybook in Maths.”  “I leaves the daybook in Maths.”  Be careful, however. Sometimes mistakes aren’t that obvious, and are easy to make.  We usually do not have to think about using the right verb. Good morning! Write a general account of your morning routine in the present tense. “I wake up at 7 o’clock, but I don’t get out of bed for an hour. I see if the bathroom is free…”

This student was asked to write about her morning using the present tense. Which verbs seem out of place? At 7.30 exactly, I leap out of bed and stagger over to my alarm clock. It’s the loudest alarm clock in the world. I walked downstairs and am greeted by my mum. She is always there fussing over me in the morning. She said I am going to be late, that I can’t get up on time, and that she doesn’t know what to do with me. I have the same thing for breakfast every day. I ate a banana with toast, and washed it down with tea. My brother eventually makes an appearance. He’s incredibly lazy, and was really grumpy in the morning. After a few minutes of listening to him moan I’m ready to leave the house. I slammed the door shut with relief.

This is a useful exercise. You make mistakes because we use all kinds of different tenses all the time. We can say this opening is written in the present tense, but are all the verbs present? What’s going on? At 7.30 exactly, I leap out of bed and stagger over to my alarm clock. I sprained my ankle doing it once. I have the loudest alarm clock in the world; you won’t find another one as horribly piercing. After my daily ordeal in the bathroom I trek downstairs. Once Mum has finished moaning at me, I grab some breakfast. 3 tips to master tenses in writing: 1.Engage in lots of thoughtful discussion 2.Read lots 3.Practise writing and re-drafting 3 tips to master tenses in writing: 1.Engage in lots of thoughtful discussion 2.Read lots 3.Practise writing and re-drafting
