archly (adv.) extremely; to react in an arch way (having or showing an amused feeling of being superior to or knowing more than other people) Curley’s wife archly addresses the men on the ranch as though she is in a class above them. cower (v.) to shrink away or crouch especially for shelter from something that threatens, controls, or disappoints If your employees cower when you approach their desks, it might be a sign that your management skills are too harsh.

deliberate (adj.) done or said in a way that is planned or intended; done or decided after careful thought When setting up dominoes, it is necessary to be deliberate or else your design may stop falling half way through.

derision (n.) the feeling that people express when they criticize and laugh at someone or something in an insulting way Nelson from The Simpsons seems to exist in a constant state of derision for the other characters.

hoosegow (n.) jail Since 1909 the word hoosegow has been used as slang for jail just like clink, joint, lockup, or pokey.

nuisance (n.) a person, thing, or situation that is annoying or that causes trouble or problems This kitten would be considered a nuisance by the helpless goldfish in this fishbowl.

rapt (adj.) Showing complete interest in something; transported with emotion; wholly absorbed This student is looking raptly at the teacher during the lesson.

reprehensible (adj.) very bad; deserving disapproval or condemnation I find it reprehensible that some people do not correctly secure their young children in a car seat.

rheumatism (n.) a disease that causes stiffness and pain in the muscles and swelling and pain in the joints Old dogs can get rheumatism; when this happens they can no longer move normally. Even going up the stairs can be impossible.
