Automatic Dental Bur Loader NCDA Dental Products Development Group Preliminary Proposal Presentation Team 06 Project September 1998

Automatic Dental Bur Loader Team: 06Members: Jason Dickey, Greg Frantz, Allison Martin, Nancy Meyer Customer: Bill Lydick-L.D. Caulk Advisor: Dr. Jim Glancey Mission: To develop a cost effective dental bur automatic loading and unloading device, while fulfilling as many of the customer and team wants as possible, within the specified time and budget constraints. Approach: Using the SSD process, we will determine our customers, their wants and constraints, associated metrics, benchmarks, which will lead into the conceptual design of the automatic dental bur loader.

Background b 45.8 billion dental services industry b Private pay predominates over Medicare and Medicaid b Dental insurance makes care easier to receive b Increasing median age of dental patients

Project Description b Automate loading of bur grinder b Reduce manufacturing costs b Economical if firm budget is maintained

Bur Grinding Process b Load bur by hand b Tighten collar b Raise bur tip support b Start automatic grinding process b Loosen bur tip support b Loosen collar b Remove bur by hand

Benefits to L.D. Caulk b Looking to reduce labor costs through complete automation of grinders b Currently require 3 operators per shift for 27 grinders b Estimate only one operator will be required for automated process

Mission Statement “ To develop a cost effective dental bur automatic loading and unloading device, while fulfilling as many of the customer and team wants as possible, within the specified time and budget constraints.”

Top 10 Customer Wants

Constraints b Unit cost of $8000 when built in a quantity of 27 units b Cycle time of < 13 seconds b Deliver documentation b Must have safety interlock b Must perform design evaluation b Voltage and air pressure requirements

Benchmarks b Current Grinder - Loaded manually b Yamaha Automatic Loader b Robotic Arms b Loading Devices for Manufacturing processes

Current Schedule
