Shift Blocks Preview takes into account discussion at Run Coordination Meeting of 2009/04/01 Prepared by C.Clement, B. Gorini M. Aleksa, A. Ciocio, S. Zimmermannn 1

Working hour rules Criteria for Data taking efficiency Some flexibility 2

Criteria – Working Hours Eules In Chapter 3 of Maximum Working Time 12 hours per day 57 hours per week => no real constraint Minimum Rest Time One and a half day of rest after 6 consecutive days of work 6 days per month => forbids 4+3 scheme widely used in

Criteria - Block Length Motivation of blocks: 1) The same crew operating the experiment for several days in a row. Significantly more efficient with crew of people working together 2) Enforce series of shifts rather than scattered shifts all over the year Significantly more efficient if shifters don't have to relearn each time Longer blocks +) believed to give more efficient operation because criteria above --) not adapted to resident experts (significant pool) --) not adapted to non-residents with faculty duties --) too much routine can also be negative! Compromise b/w long (~1 week long blocks) and (1-2 days) blocks => Allow 3 or 4 day blocks, but make sure long blocks are still possible CANNOT have large rotation of shifters especially out of hours => don't burn out the on-calls and experts 4

Other Operation Efficiency Issues Require shifters do a minimum number of 14 shifts. Limit the number of days of the week with fresh shifters Avoid fresh shifters during week end. Forbid directly in the shift booking tool all permutations that are against the CERN working hour rules. 5

Flexibility Maximise the number of opportunities to do 6 shifts in one week Break the 8 day long block but in exchange: - enforce 3/4 days long blocks - set expiration for the training - shadow shifts to be redone after >3 months - strongly recommend for people not working on a regular basis with operation, to take the 14 shifts taken within a short eriod of time Appreciation of what kind of shifts people like or dislike very subjective Base ourselves on objective criteria: efficiency & flexibility 6

Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Same crews always operate the experiment for 3 or 4 days in a row No shift block starting during week ends Allow resident experts to take shifts Limit rotation of new comers outside normal working hours 1 st Illustration on how to schedule your shifts 7

Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 System coordinators should require that the new shifters do not start with night shifts (motivation: limit the calls to on-call experts during nights...) 2 nd Illustration on how to schedule your shifts 3 rd Illustration on how to schedule your shifts 8

Conclusion of this work We have ONE scheme which – Retains efficient operation – Gives some flexibility compared to the 7 shift long blocks with 3/4 days blocks – Respects working hour rules Present this scheme in EB on Friday. 9
