 Took control of Afghanistan and forbid women and girls from going to school  Also forbid music, TV, kites, cameras, smoking, and applause  Require women to wear very modest clothing  Taliban sometimes send daughters to school in other countries  Exports of opium poppies increased 25% under Taliban rule

 Almost no healthcare for women  40,000 widows who couldn’t support themselves  Need health officials, but can’t leave their houses to get them, so they sit praying for help.  Eating grass and getting skin diseases from lack of light  Dying from illness and starvation

 Taliban Islamic militia took control of Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul  Issued edict  Edict forbade women and girls from working or going to school  Schools for boys became strictly religious  Some girls were poisoned for going to school

 Nearly head to toe covering worn by women  Small mesh opening over eyes  Limited vision  Causes injuries from lack of vision  Taliban forced women to wear them outside

 It’s thought of as a way for men to defend their honor  Women don’t have many rights  Even if wife is murdered, the husband can get away with it if judge is sympathetic towards him  Man is mot punished with death  Seen as way of “taming” their wives

 Afghanistan’s illiteracy rate is 72%  Pakistan’s is 50%  70% of women in the Middle East who experience violence are illiterate  Raising awareness lessens violence

 Honor killing is when a women is killed to avoid bringing shame to the family  It could be for refusing an arranged marriage, being a victim of a sexual assault, or doing something else the family doesn’t approve of  Every year, over 5000 women are killed in Middle Eastern honor killings

 Islamic State  Takes pride in it’s Islamic values  Ready to sacrifice a lot for Islam  Segregates men and women  Women be very restricted in society  Male dominated society, but they had a female Prime Minister

 The most a husband will tolerate from his wife is specific requests for items for the home  That is considered pampered  Women’s status come from the men in charge of her  Women are greatly repressed  “There spirit is murdered”

 Women in rural areas have a double job  They have to do house work and farm work  First to rise, last to sleep  Working late through the night sometimes  Women in urban areas have more rights

 Islam allows for a man to have up to four wives at one time  Polygamy is allowed by law too  Polygamy is causing the birth rate to rise  This is causing overpopulation which can cause hunger

 1% of Palestinian women have lodged complaint, although many more have been abused  98 honor killings in Gaza in one year  85 reported cases of rape, only one conviction  90% of people committing violence are illiterate
