Black Bart Bartholomew By Georgia Luther W. Stiern Middle School Ms. Marshall Period 3/ HSS

Black Bart His full name is John Bartholomew Roberts, but most people call him Black Bart He was born in 1682 in a small town Newcastle, southern Wales He was one of the most successful pirates of the time He encouraged prayer, he forbid drinking and gambling, and instead of drinking alcohol he a lot drank tea. He wore fancy gentlemen's clothing such as a rich crimson waist coat and breeches, a hat with a red feather, and a diamond cross hanging from his neck.

His accomplishments He was the last great pirate of the golden age. When he was a third mate on the British slaver Princess he was captured to be a slave by pirate Howell Davis in June 1719 When Davis was killed Black Bart was elected captain Black Bart went to Guinea, and grew tired of the slim choices, so he sailed to the Brazilian coast. While at the Brazilian coast he stole many valuable jewels.

Black Bart's Achievements Then in the early 1720’s went to Northward to rest at Devil’s Island People in the Caribbean had already heard of him so he exited quickly and sailed to New England and sold everything he had accumulated from the Brazilian Coast. In the summertime of 1720 he was very successful In Newfoundland With many captures, and the sink of all but one of 22 merchant ships in the Bay of Treffisi

The spare ship was a French brig that he named The Royal Fortune which he added guns to and sailed to the Caribbean after a failed attempt to sail to Africa. In the fall of the 1720’s he began a six-month tear through the West Indies. He angered with the provincial Governors, with one of them he hung for taking his warship.

In the spring of 1720,when shipping came to a discontinuance, Black Bart sailed to Africa, when other ships got in his way, he learned to profit off the sale of slaves. In Liberia he captured the Royal Africa Company’s Onslow which became the last Royal Fortune.

Black Bart’s Death His legendary 30-month career ended on February 10, the warship HMS Swallow, which was captained by Challoner Ogle, caught up with Black Bart when they were off the Cape of Lopez. It is questionable if he was trying to escape or size up the antagonist, but the Grapeshot killed Black Bart either way. Black Bart had always requested to be thrown overboard when he dies, so his crew did so.

On March 28, 1722 the crew was thrown into prison under the Cape of Coast Castle in West Africa. On March 28, 1722 the crew was thrown into prison under the Cape of Coast Castle in West Africa.
