Rainforest What is a Rainforest? Where do you find them? What can you find in a Rainforest?

Where Are They?

Jozani Rainforest

Zanzibar's first and only National Park is centred on Jozani Forest, the largest area of mature forest found within Zanzibar. The forest lies in a shallow trough in the fossil coral bed between the mangrove filled bays of Chwaka and Uzi. Seasonal flooding, and a high water table, has given rise to a unique groundwater forest.

Jozani Rainforest The main purpose of the National Park is conserving the forest and its surrounding environment. This is achieved, in partnership with local communities in many different forms, from educational activities through to practical tasks such as mangrove replanting. What are mangroves? They are trees and shrubs which grow in salty coastal habitats. They act a vital nursery for many types of fish.

Jozani Rainforest At the south end of the forest is a boardwalk through the mangrove swamp. Some of the animals you could find are: Coconut crab Cardinal woodpecker

Jozani Rainforest There are also over 50 species of butterfly and 40 species of birds. It’s also rumoured to be the stomping ground of the rare Zanzibar leopard - so rare in fact that few people have claimed to have seen it, and the last sighting was several years ago!
