Ecosystems, Communities, and Biomes Chapter 2 Ecosystems, Communities, and Biomes

biome – a large group of similar ecosystems

climate – the normal pattern of weather that occurs in an area over a long period of time

community – a group of living things of different species found in an ecosystem

desert – a very dry biome

ecosystem – all the living and nonliving things that interact in a given area

food chain – a description of how energy in an ecosystem flows from one organism to another consumers producer decomposer

food web – a description of all the food chains in an ecosystem

grasslands – land covered by grasses with few trees

population – all the members of the same type of organism living in an ecosystem

taiga – biome that has long, severe winters and short, cool summers

temperate forest – a forest that experiences four distinct seasons: summer, fall, winter and spring Shown in green below

tropical rain forest – a forest in a region that is very hot and very rainy

tundra – Earth’s coldest biome Shown in yellow
