TROPICAL RAINFOREST DEJAH BRINSON & LOGAN MCINTOSH
LOCATION OF BIOME Tropical rainforest re located near the equator. Fifty seven percent of all tropical rainforests are found in Latin America. One third of the world's tropical rainforests are in Brazil. Other tropical rainforests are located in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands
CLIMATE OF BIOME Tropical rainforest have year round warmth Average of 50 to 260 inches of rainfall yearly Temperature rarely gets higher than 93 degrees or lower than 68 degrees Humidity is between 77 to 88% Does not have 4 seasons Stable climate does not allow the biome to have a wet/dry season
SOIL WITHIN THE BIOME Soil in the tropical rainforests is very nutrient poor The topsoil is only one to two inches deep The soil makes the plant life lush Plants store nutrient themselves instead of getting it from the soil
PLANTS IN THE BIOME Plants adapt in the tropical rainforest by using the trees for sunlight Plants found in tropical rainforest... Buttresses- have big shallow roots to support the trees. Lianas- grows into canopy for sunlight. Orchids- thin smooth bark. Carnivorous plants- have a cavity filled with sweet or terrible smelling nectar that attract insects. The aerial plants- accumulate nutrition from the air
ANIMALS IN THE BIOME Animals adapt in the tropical rainforest by eating a specific plant or animal that few others eat. Parrots/Toucans- have big strong beaks to crack open nuts. Three-Toed-Sloth- camouflage to escape predators. Leafcutter ants- have saliva that grows the fungus that they eat.
ENDANGERED SPECIES Gorilla- extinct because of habitat loss and disease Orangutan- habitat loss, hunting and trapping for trade Jaguar- loss of habitat and threat of poachers Toucan- habitat loss and capture for commercial (pet markets) Bengal Tiger- Large-scale poaching and habitat loss CITES is a law to protect wildlife against exploitation in the tropical rainforest.
THREATS TO THE BIOME The greatest cause of tropical rainforest destruction today comes from human activities such as…….. Oil extraction Logging Mining Fires War Commercial agriculture Cattle ranching Hunting All this can lead to deforestation
