Presentation transcript:

Unit 1 – Topic 3 – Battle for the Biosphere On your A3 sheet: What key terms can you remember?

Climate change Typical foundation exam question: (4 Marks) Describe two effects of deforestation on the environment. What are the triggers in this question?

Climate change Typical higher exam question: (4 Marks) The destruction of some forests has made us more aware of the benefits they can provide. Explain the value of a biome you have studied. What are the triggers in this question?

Biomes are very valuable to us as they have lots of uses and provide lots of benefits. Not only are they habitats to lots of different animals but they also provide materials that people rely on, including food, building materials and resources for medicines. Biomes such as rainforests regulate climate and when changed this can impact the hydrological cycle. Rainforests are a source of goods (wood for heating and cooking) for local native tribes as well as companies who make money.

Case studies Sustainable management in Costa Rica BAPs (Biodiversity action plan) RAMSAR – Convention on protection of wetlands. CITES – Convention on International Trade In Endangered Species

More exam questions Suggest two reasons why many rainforest areas are being cut down (deforestation) (2) Describe how temperature changes with altitude. (2) Describe one way in which people are trying to conserve the biosphere. (2) Describe the value of a named biome in providing goods and services. (4) Where are tropical forests mainly found? Forests are ecosystems. Suggest two ways in which humans could protect ecosystems. (2)
