Why is tropical rain forest so important for us?

Consequences of deforestation: Importance to local people

Homes of many native people TRF provides food by practising shifting cultivation. The Yanomami people live in the Amazon rainforest. They obtain their food from farm plots cleared from the forest, river and hunt.

Habitats of plants and animals More than 1/3 of all species in the world live in the Amazon Rainforest. home to about 2.5 million insect species, tens of thousands of plants, and some 2000 birds and mammals. at least 40,000 plant species, 3,000 fish, 1,294 birds, 427 mammals, 428 amphibians, and 378 reptiles have been scientifically classified in the region. Scientists have described between 96,660 and 128,843 invertebrate species in Brazil alone. Largest Biodiversity

Consequences of deforestation: Importance to soil

Protecting top soil from erosion & flooding DEFORESTATION Heavy rain washes away the top soil (soil erosion) Soil flows into river The channel becomes shallow FLOODING

Consequences of deforestation: Importance to local climate

Maintain local climate More trees More evapo-transpiration More condensation More precipitation Normal water cycle Less trees Less evapo-transpiration Less condensation Less precipitation Local drought

Importance of tropical rain forest to local region Provide food for local people Provide habitats for wildlife and plants Protect soil and prevent flooding Maintain water cycle and local climate
