AME Fosters Curricular Innovation and Encourages Educational Scholarship AME Innovations Funding program is open to ALL SOM faculty to research, create and implement new ways of teaching complex diagnostic and treatment skills that will advance the quality of health care –Development of new curricular elements –Focused faculty development undertakings –Comparison of pedagogical approaches –Innovative approaches to learner assessment –6 intramural grants total $173,500 in 2012

What is TIP-TOP and the Education Consult Program? TIP-TOP=Teaching Improvement/Teaching Observation Program Voluntary peer mentorship program available for faculty of all levels Consultation services provided by Academy members with expertise in different areas of medical education Faculty “mentees” receive a letter noting their participation in a faculty development program which is copied to their Chair

What is TIP: Education Consult Program? TIP provides Educational Consults for –Using new educational modalities (e.g. PBL, TBL, ARS/classroom technology, clinical simulation etc.) –Curriculum development To request a TIP Consult: –Visit the Educational Consult page of the Academy’s website: ent/Education_Consult.aspx –Review the list for your topic of interest and Karen Brent with the topic and you will be paired with a content expert.

What is TOP? TOP = Teaching Observation Program Any UCSF faculty member can request : –to be observed in the teaching environment (small group, lecture, clinic), followed by a confidential feedback session –to observe an AME member teach, and meet after to discuss observations and best practices TOP mentors are AME members who have been trained in observation and feedback

What happens when I request a TOP observation? AME observer contacts you for date and time of observation and your focus for the session AME observer observes teaching Faculty member and AME observer have a confidential discussion of the teaching session and future faculty development A letter recognizing your participation in a TOP session is sent to you and copied to your Chair You add your participation to your CV
