HIBAM PROJECT HYDROLOGIE AND GEOCHEMISTRY OF AMAZON BASIC The cooperation between Brazil and France as far as Hydrology in the Amazon Basin is concerned started in 1984, by means of CNPq-ORSTOM accord in projects developed by DNAEE and ORSTOM (extincts), in which a great endeavor has been made to improve the collection of information and measurements of liquid discharge in difficult situations. During that time, researches and training were carried out about measurement in big rivers and telemetry via satellite was installed, ARGOS system, at strategic sites of the Amazon Basin.

From 1994 onwards, HIBAM project initiated more aimed at research, including, sedimentology and geochemistry, besides hydrology. The results of the works of the HIBAM Project carried out until 1999 were presented at the Hydrological and Gochenical Process in Large- scale River Basins, Manaus 99. The present phase of the HIBAM Project, “Hydrology and Geochemistry of the Amazon Basin”, started in 2001, showed, among others, the following outcomes:

Increase in the use of the current accoustic and Doppler effect – ADCP in measurements of discharge and its potential for measurements of solid discharge, according to research in course (Dr. Naziano Pantoja Filizola Jr.) Coaching of Brazilian and French technicians as for the use of ADCP in big rivers, through the organization of International Courses of Measurements in Big Rivers at Manacapuru, Solimões River, sponsored by ANA and WMO for supporting the participations of foreign technicians.

Discharge Measurement in mouth Madeira River

Operation of a network composed of 10 reference stations at the whole basin for collecting samples of surface water at each 10 days, generating important information about the sediment variation and physico-chemist parameters. Instalation and operation of a monthly network of reference stations in a experimental floodplain for monitoring of concentrations of suspended material, of the major elements and the organic carbon. Georeferencing at the sea level of the main ANA’s fluviometric stations and those that belong to the project, with participation of IBGE and USP.

Estação Pluviometrica de Setor Cachoerinha

Realization of 11 field campaigns for obtaining batimetric profiles, flow measurements and sampling of water and sediment for determining phisico-chemist parameters, major elements and traces, organic carbon and suspended matter. Publication of 35 articles in books, international and national magazines with the results of the project and 60 participations in seminars and/or congresses in Brazil and abroad with the results of the project.

To turn the HIBAM project data bank available at the site LBA with three links, one of there is At the site HIBAM there are: Measurements of discharge made with ADCP (about 4,000 raw data files); Monthy total rainfall in 950 pluviometers, updated antil 2003; Phisical-chemistry parameters and/or suspended material concentrations of 566 water samples; Results of chemical analysis of 278 water samples and of 133 suspended matter samples; Plants with georeferenced information (fluviometric network, terrain based model of the Amazon Basin) in ArcView format.
