4 COLOMBIA The Caribbean island of Colombia just off the coast of Central America has a lot to offer to tourists. Diving or getting your open water scuba diving certificate is a great idea with crystal clear waters and a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve (If UNESCO recognizes it, you have to see it!). You can find all the outdoor adventures you can dream of including tanning at the beach, para sailing, wind surfing, and even horseback riding. Colombia nightlife offers something for everyone, from sipping mojitos in the plazas of old Cartagena to dancing the night away in the salsa clubs of Cali. Every big city features a host of theaters for inexpensive music and dance performances. And the rural pueblos in Colombia offer the opportunity to escape the noise and relax in the country.

Colombia Country Statics Location:Northern South America, bordering the Caribbean Sea, between Panama and Venezuela, and bordering the North Pacific Ocean, between Ecuador and Panama Climate:Tropical along coast and eastern plains; cooler in highlands Capital:BOGOTA Population:45,239,079 (July 2012 est.) Visitors:1.8 million (2011 visitors +7.3 increase from 2010) Government Type:Republic; executive branch dominates government structure Head of Government:President Juan Manuel SANTOS Calderon (since 7 August 2010) Industries:Textiles, food processing, oil, clothing and footwear, beverages, chemicals, cement; gold, coal, emeralds Economy Overview:Colombia's consistently sound economic policies and aggressive promotion of free trade agreements in recent years have bolstered its ability to face external shocks. Real GDP grew 5.7% in 2011 and inflation ended 2011 at 3.7%, continuing almost a decade of strong economic performance. All three major ratings agencies have upgraded Colombia''s investment grade. Nevertheless, Colombia depends heavily on oil exports, making it vulnerable to a drop in oil prices. Economic development is stymied by inadequate infrastructure, weakened further by recent flooding. Moreover, the unemployment rate of 10.8% in 2011 is still one of Latin America''s highest. The SANTOS Administration''s foreign policy has focused on bolstering Colombia''s commercial ties and boosting investment at home. The US-Colombia Free Trade Agreement (FTA) was ratified by the US Congress in October 2011 and is pending implementation in 2012 GDP – composition by sector:Agriculture: 6.8% Industry: 38.1% Services: 55.1% (2012 est.) 5
