APPRENTICESHIP Employer-Driven-Career Development for Employees Employer-driven-career-development for employees holds potential for increasing your company’s profits and productivity, and improving the lives of your employees. Plus, employers NOR apprentices pay college tuition for the approved course of study program.

WHAT IS AN “APPRENTICE”? CLUE What is the name of the TV program in which DONALD TRUMP is the star?

WHAT IS AN “APPRENTICEABLE OCCUPATION”? An “Apprenticeable Occupation” is one which requires independent judgment and the application of manual, mechanical, technical, or professional skills and is best learned through an organized system of on-the-job training with related and supplemental instruction. California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 205 Definitions/ Chapter 2, California Apprenticeship Council / Subchapter 1. Apprenticeship / Article 2. Definitions / Section 205 (c)

“RELATED and SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION” RSI “Related and Supplemental Instruction” means an organized and systematic form of instruction designed to provide the apprentice with knowledge including the theoretical and technical subjects related and supplemental to the skill(s) involved. California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 205 Definitions/ Chapter 2, California Apprenticeship Council / Subchapter 1. Apprenticeship / Article 2. Definitions / Section 205 (h)

Starting a State Registered Apprenticeship Program Employer (Program Sponsor) wants an apprenticeship program Related and Supplemental Instruction (RSI) via a a community college Employee ON-THE-JOB Supervised Learning Division of Apprenticeship Standards (DAS) (DAS is a Division within the State Department of Industrial Relations) Employer asks a community college to go forth with a “good faith” effort. The college agrees. Employer determines curriculum and possibly teaches RSI at employer’s site Board of Trustees and CEO sign off on Approval Application and sends to CCCCO. CCCCO approves application pending receipt of DAS Chief’s approval letter. CCCCO now notifies the DAS field office. CCCCO approves curriculum when CCCCO receives the signed approval letter. Employer meets with DAS field office to write Standards for the employer’s program and then sends application to DAS Headquarters. DAS Headquarters reviews application. If approvable, the DAS Chief orhis/her designee signs the approval letter. DAS sends approval letter to the employer and to the CCCCO. Benefits of Having a State Registered Apprenticeship Program Employer Benefits from such items as:  Program improves knowledge, skills and performance levels of employees  Classes can be held at your facilities (and employer gets paid for it) or at a local community college. You may want your apprentices to learn on your equipment and be taught by your experienced/qualified employees.  Employer does not pay college tuition for their apprentices

Benefits of Having a State Registered Apprenticeship Program APPRENTICES Benefit from such items as:  They master applying knowledge and skills on-the- job under the supervision of the employer’s specially selected mentors.  They DO NOT PAY COLLEGE TUITION for courses approved by DAS as part of the required apprenticeship course/lab work.  They can earn college credits towards certificates and associate degrees  They commit to a multiyear agreement to finish the apprenticeship program
