The following presentation could be used as an “on-line lesson” if accompanied of audio visual material. Any speaking activity could be, if necessary, recorded by the student and sent to the teacher. Have you noticed the different ending (o/a) ?: “Nouns in Spanish have a gender -masculine \feminine-. The rule (90%) could be that a noun ending in “A” is feminine, otherwise is masculine. Therefore, if we greet to a woman, we’ll say “Encantada, o Bienvenida”.

Look at these flashcards and work in pairs. One partner points to a flashcard and the other pronounce correctly. Then, the other partner pronounce a greeting and his/her colleague has to point to the correct flashcard. Award points for correct answers.

Now, prepare a short conversation using the following flashcards. You will refer to the time of the day and welcome and greet a visitor to your company.

Now,stand up and practise that short conversation with a male and female colleague. Pay attention to the different ending depending on the gender of your colleague.

a third party introduces us Let’s see when a third party introduces us to another person. “Le presento” “Les presento” When one person is introduced to me. When one person is introduced to a group.

a Formal & Informal introduction Have you noticed the difference betwee a Formal & Informal introduction ?. “Le presento” / “Te presento” “Les presento” / “Os presento” In the next two slides you look at different expressions, some + /- formal.

Activity: Think of a situation, eg a salesman arriving to a branch of the firm in another city, and you are introduced to the manager. In groups of three, prepare an script using the expressions from the previous two slides. Remember you are in a business situation. Eg: “Le presento al Señor Martinez. Me alegro de conocerle. Igualmente.”

A social aspect: Hand shaking : Hand shaking : in a business situation no kisses but just a hand shake. When people knows to each other, and between man and womad, two kisses.

“ Hasta el próximo ……” What day is today? Today is Look at the question and answer in English. Look for the pattern that is followed. Now, apply the same logical to the question and answer in Spanish.

Activity: Write one day of the week on a small piece of paper, don’t let the others see what you’ve got. “¿Qué día es hoy?” “¿Hoy es ……?”. One starts with the question “¿Qué día es hoy?” “¿Hoy es ……?”. Your colleague needs to guess what card you have got. Right guess, you get the card, wrong guess the other student’s turn.

2 nd Activity: Go back to your first scrip with greetings and introduce a “bye” expression. Again, perform with a male and female colleague. Think of an activity or image you can associate to each day of the week. In pairs, play a guessing game. 3rd Activity:

Use the expressions learnt to fill in the speech bubbles.

Cultural Awareness: Interrogation and exclamation symbols: (¿…..?). An upside down symbol of interrogation is used at the beginning of the question (¿…..?). (¡ …!). The same for an exclamation symbol (¡ …!).
