How and When Does a Student Apply? Students must apply during their last year in high school or forfeit all future eligibility for a Bright Futures Scholarship. A student who receives a Bright Futures award and attends an out- of-state postsecondary institution and then returns to Florida to complete his/her education within three years may apply for reinstatement of the original award. An initially eligible student who enlists in the United States Armed Forces immediately after high school graduation will begin the three- year eligibility period for his/her initial award upon the date of separation from active duty. In order to receive funding for a Florida Bright Futures award, a student must be a Florida resident and a U.S. citizen or eligible non- citizen. The postsecondary institution the student attends is responsible for making residency and citizenship determinations.

To Be Considered for a Florida Bright Futures Scholarship a Student Must: Apply for a Florida Bright Futures Scholarship by completing the Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA)* during his/her last year in high school. A student may apply online at beginning December 1st of his/her last year in high school. This application gives the Department of Education (DOE) permission to evaluate his/her high school transcripts for eligibility for a Florida Bright Futures Scholarship. Earn a Florida standard high school diploma or its equivalent. **its equivalent Not have been found guilty of, or plead nolo contendere to, a felony charge. The demographic information a student provides on the FFAA will be used to retrieve and evaluate his/her high school transcript. If the demographic information provided on the FFAA does not match the demographic information on his/her high school transcript, he/she will not receive an official Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program evaluation. A student may use his/her report card or contact his/her high school to assist in verifying this information. Additional documentation is required for Home Education, GED, and out-of-state applicants. This application is easy to complete and applicants receive an immediate response.

FFAA applicants will receive a User ID and PIN for the Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) website. A student will access the OSFA website at to monitor the status of his/her Florida Financial Aid Application. How and When is a Student Notified of His/Her Eligibility? Early Evaluations (7th Semester) All students whose transcripts are submitted for an official early evaluation (based on academic progress in the middle of the last year of high school) will receive either an award or an ineligibility letter from the Florida Department of Education. Notification letters based on early evaluation are mailed beginning in March.

End-of-Year Evaluations (8th Semester) If a student's transcript is submitted for an official evaluation after his/her last term in high school, the student will receive an award (or ineligibility letter) only if he/she did not receive an early evaluation or if the student's award status has improved since the early evaluation. Notification letters based on the end of year evaluations are mailed beginning in June for FAS awardees (with test scores through April) and in August for FAS awardees (with test scores through June) and all other awardees.

The Process The award (or ineligibility letter) will be mailed to the address listed on a student's Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA). Included with an award letter will be: information about the award; instructions regarding how to notify the Florida Department of Education of the college the student plans to attend and how to correct any information Bright Futures has on file; and instructions explaining how the student can access his/her Bright Futures record on the Internet.

A User ID and PIN assigned at the time the student submits his/her FFAA will enable a student to: view his/her award; view and/or update his/her demographic information; view and/or update his/her postsecondary institution choice; view the amount disbursed each semester; view the spring renewal GPA; monitor his/her hours remaining for the year and for the scholarship; and view a list of correspondence mailed to him/her by the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program.

Included with an ineligibility letter will be: instructions explaining how a student can monitor his/her eligibility status in the event the GPA or test scores improve prior to the end of June.

FACTS.org The website allows public high school students to review their academic progress toward meeting initial eligibility requirements for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program and course requirements for admission into the State University System. Public high school students in grades 9-12 may access their records by creating their own login ID and password.

College Notification Notification of a student's award will be made available to all eligible postsecondary institutions via an Internet Directory of Eligible Students when a student's award status is official.

How Long May a Student Use His/Her Florida Bright Futures Scholarship? How many hours of funding are available to Florida Academic and Medallion Scholars? A student may receive up to 132 semester hours (or the equivalent in quarter or clock hours) towards completion of a certificate or a first baccalaureate degree. This also applies to students in 3/2 programs who are classified as undergraduate. Graduate or undergraduate classification is determined by the postsecondary institution. Unused hours may not be used for further course funding after a student earns a baccalaureate degree. A student who is in an undergraduate program of study that requires more than 120 semester hours (or the equivalent in quarter or clock hours) may apply for an extension of hours for funding. The application will be mailed to the student automatically when he/she approaches the last 30 semester hours (or the equivalent in quarter or clock hours) of his/her scholarship program. A student may participate up to seven years from high school graduation (if the student initially was funded within three years after high school graduation) or up to completion of his/her first baccalaureate degree program, whichever comes first.

Students Who Enlist in the Military An initially eligible student who enlists in the United States Armed Forces immediately after high school graduation will begin the three-year eligibility period for his/her initial award upon the date of separation from active duty. A student who is receiving a Florida Academic Scholars award or a Florida Medallion Scholars award and discontinues his/her education to enlist in the United States Armed Forces commences the remainder of his/her seven-year renewal period upon the date of separation from active duty.
