Mississippi Department of Education Office Of Curriculum and Instruction 1 Curriculum and Instruction Updates Management Information Systems Data Conference August 17-18, 2010

Mississippi Department of Education Office Of Curriculum and Instruction 2 Presentation includes updates on… Gifted Teacher Units Credit Recovery Approved Courses Manual Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit Cumulative Folders Mississippi Virtual Public Schools

Mississippi Department of Education Office Of Curriculum and Instruction 3 Gifted Teacher Units Allocations / In the school year, allocations were based on gifted eligible student counts. In the school year, allocations were based on the number of units funded in the school year.

Mississippi Department of Education Office Of Curriculum and Instruction 4 Allocation Process For the school year, districts were not allocated any gifted teacher units due to budget constraints. Districts received funding for their gifted programs in their MAEP lump sum.

Mississippi Department of Education Office Of Curriculum and Instruction 5 Funding of Gifted Teacher Units All funding of gifted teacher units is done referencing individual teacher schedules and gifted student reports as they appear in MSIS after November data is submitted to the MDE. If data is entered incorrectly, the district may not be in compliance to receive full funding.

Mississippi Department of Education Office Of Curriculum and Instruction 6 Teacher’s Schedule Each teacher’s schedule provides the following information: –Class period with number of students –Class minutes and gifted minutes If the number of gifted minutes is less than the number of class minutes, there are students scheduled that do not have the gifted indicator marked on the student record in MSIS.

Mississippi Department of Education Office Of Curriculum and Instruction 7 Teacher Schedule

Mississippi Department of Education Office Of Curriculum and Instruction 8 Gifted Students Report Details the number of gifted students by: Teacher School Grade Gifted program type Number of eligible and/or ineligible students

Mississippi Department of Education Office Of Curriculum and Instruction 9 Gifted Students Report

Mississippi Department of Education Office Of Curriculum and Instruction 10 Funding of Gifted Teacher Units Gifted Students Report (Grades 2-8) –Compares gifted course code on student’s schedule to the gifted eligibility type. –If the course code and gifted eligibility type match, then the student is counted as an eligible gifted student. –If the course code and the gifted eligibility type do not match, then the student is counted as ineligible.

Mississippi Department of Education Office Of Curriculum and Instruction 11 School Name Gifted Program Eligible and Ineligible Students Served Grade Level

Mississippi Department of Education Office Of Curriculum and Instruction 12 Funding of Gifted Teacher Units Grades 2-8 Requires eligible students for a full-time teacher of the gifted. The gifted program is subject to proration if –A teacher serves fewer than 20 students –A teacher serves more than 45 students –A teacher serves ineligible students –A teacher serves only a part of the instructional day in the gifted program A teacher that does not have the appropriate endorsement(s) is not eligible for funding.

Mississippi Department of Education Office Of Curriculum and Instruction 13 Funding of Gifted Teacher Units Grades 9-12 A teacher that does not have the proper endorsements for the class being taught is not eligible for funding. Teachers of the gifted in grades 9-12 are required to have the proper secondary endorsement for the course being taught PLUS a valid gifted endorsement. This also applies to Advanced Placement (AP) courses funded through gifted.

Mississippi Department of Education Office Of Curriculum and Instruction 14 Data Entry The teacher’s schedule must have a code “6” under federal programs in order to receive full funding. If the code “6” is not indicated, the MSIS program will not count the gifted course as eligible for funding. And MSIS will not indicate the students in that course identified as gifted eligible.

Mississippi Department of Education Office Of Curriculum and Instruction 15 Endorsements Federal Program Code

Mississippi Department of Education Office Of Curriculum and Instruction 16 Data Entry Codes intellectually gifted (grades 2-8) creatively gifted (grades 2-8) artistically gifted (grades 2-8) All course codes for grades 9-12 are found in the Approved Courses for the Secondary Schools of Mississippi at um/Curr.htm um/Curr.htm

Mississippi Department of Education Office Of Curriculum and Instruction 17 Data Entry and Assessment Time is the code for assessment time. A district may assign one assessment period to a teacher of the gifted based on the number of gifted students being served district wide. –1-300 (1 class period) – (2 class periods) – (3 class periods); etc.

Mississippi Department of Education Office Of Curriculum and Instruction 18 Data Entry and Assessment Time A teacher of the gifted may have up to 60 minutes of assessment time per day, or ½ day per week if scheduled all in the same day (p.18 in regulations). If the district qualifies for more than one assessment period, it can be scheduled for as many teachers that qualify based on the regulations.

Mississippi Department of Education Office Of Curriculum and Instruction 19 A Note About “Working Full-Time in the Gifted Program” Grades 2-12 According to Accreditation Standard 20.2, “A teaching day must provide a minimum of 330 minutes of instructional time per day”. For the purpose of funding teacher units, “full time in the gifted program” means 330 minutes per day. A minimum of 330 minutes per day in the gifted program must be reflected on the individual teacher schedules. These minutes include instructional time (in gifted courses), planning time, and/or assessment time (if warranted).
