Asking information questions: Follow the formula: Interrogative expression + est-ce que + subject + verb…..? Ex. Où est-ce que tu habites? – where do you live?

Interrogative Expressions: Où - where Quand - when À quelle heure – at what time Comment - how Pourquoi - why ---parce que – because (not really an interrogative expression but it goes along with them) Ah bon? – oh really?

Qui Expressions: TO ASK ABOUT PEOPLE Qui – who(m) À qui – to who(m) De qui – of who(m) Avec qui – with who(m) Pour qui – for who(m)

To ask who is DOING something Qui + verb ….? Ex. Qui habite ici? – Who lives here? Qui organise la boum? – Who organizes the party? You don’t know who the subject is, so use the third person singular for the verb.

To ask WHAT someone is doing Qu’est-ce que + subject + verb + ….? Qu’est-ce qu’(vowel sound) + subject + verb + ….? Ex. Qu’est-ce que tu fais le weekend? – What do you do on the weekend? Ex. Qu’est-ce que tu étudies maintenant? – What are you studying now?

Note * Note: with il/elle, if the verb in the singular ends in a vowel (ex. parle), the letter “t” is inserted between the verb and the subject pronoun so that a liason can occur (remember, the French don’t like two vowels sounds together normally). Ex. Où travaille-t-il? – Where does he work? Avec qui dîne-t-elle? – With whom does she dine?
