 Under the YCJA, a person 14 years old or older may be tried as an adult for serious offences such as rape and murder  For these offences, the fate of the person on trial is determined by twelve people, called jurors  All twelve people must vote unanimously to convict or acquit an individual

 Anyone who is 18 or older and a Canadian citizen is eligible for jury duty  Anyone convicted of a crime is ineligible for jury duty  When summoned for jury duty citizens must comply or be held in contempt  Employers have to give you time off work for jury duty, but do not have to pay you
