About Fulbright program Sponsored by the United States Department of State Was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress to "enable the government of the United States to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries." Has provided more than 255,000 participants—chosen for their leadership potential—with the opportunity to observe each others’ political, economic and cultural institutions, exchange ideas, and embark on joint ventures of importance to the general welfare of the world’s inhabitants. Awards approximately 1,800 student grants to non-U.S. nationals to study in the United States annually. Approximately 3,200 new and continuing student fellows are currently in the United States on Fulbright grants. Receives its primary funding through an annual appropriation from Congress to the United States Department of State. Participating governments and host institutions in foreign countries, and in the United States, also make significant financial contributions through cost-sharing and indirect support, e.g., through salary supplements, tuition waivers, and university housing.

Who can be a Fulbrighter? The U.S. Department of State strives to ensure that the Fulbright Program represents diversity. Fulbrighters come from small villages to huge cities. They range from recent university graduates to established experts in their fields. They are students, researchers, and teachers at all types of public and private educational institutions including primary and secondary schools, community colleges, small liberal arts colleges, and large research universities. Fulbrighters come from a wide range of socioeconomic, ethnic, racial, and religious backgrounds.

Partnership between Macedonia and the U.S. The Government of Macedonia will donate $100,000 to strengthen the Fulbright program. This donation will increase the number of available scholarships for Macedonian students to study in the U.S. and receive two-year master’s degrees.

Who Are Fulbright Alumni? Hundreds of Fulbright alumni worldwide currently hold top positions in government, higher education, journalism, law, and the private sector. 18 Fulbright alumni have served as a head of state or government. 11 Fulbright alumni have been elected to the United States Congress. 1 Fulbright alumnus has served as Secretary-General of the United Nations. 1 Fulbright alumnus has served as Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). 37 Fulbright alumni from ten countries are recipients of the Nobel Prize. 1 Fulbright alumnus is a recipient of an Olympic gold medal.

Fulbright Foreign Student Program The Fulbright Foreign Student Program enables graduate students, young professionals, and artists from abroad to research and study in the United States for one year or longer. Approximately 1,650 new awards are awarded to foreign graduate students for support at U.S. universities, and some 1,300 renewal awards are also made annually.

Fulbright Scholar program (post- doctoral) in the United States Support the research and teaching of scholars visiting colleges and universities in the United States. These programs offer joint collaborative opportunities with U.S. Scholars. The Fulbright Program awards approximately 750 grants to visiting scholars worldwide each year to teach and conduct research in the U.S.

International Fulbright Science and Technology Award The International Fulbright Science and Technology Award, a component of the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, is for doctoral study at prestigious U.S. institutions in science, technology, or engineering for up to 40 outstanding foreign students.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Proficiency in English appropriate to the proposed lecturing or research project to be carried out in the United States. A detailed statement of proposed activity for research or lecturing at a U.S. institution. Macedonian citizenship and employment in Macedonia. Recipients of Fulbright Scholarships within the past 5 years will not be considered. Persons desiring or holding permanent residence in the United States are not eligible to apply for Fulbright grants to the United States. Persons who are citizens of both a partner country and the United States are also ineligible.

Do’s for Prospective Fulbright Applicants DO make sure that your qualifications and expertise match the objectives in your project statement. DO emphasize key points in the first paragraph of the proposal. DO express what you can bring to the program clearly and succinctly. DO treat the application as a unitary whole, with all parts reinforcing the project statement. DO choose your references carefully and contact them early.

Don'ts for Prospective Fulbright Applicants DO NOT use excessive jargon DO NOT be vague in describing your previous work or in laying out the nature of your proposed Fulbright activity. DO NOT stress how a Fulbright grant will benefit only you or your career. DO NOT ask someone for a letter of reference unless the person is well acquainted with your qualifications. DO NOT include any documents or supporting materials that are not in English.

Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowships Program The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program brings accomplished mid-level professionals to the United States for a year of combined academic (NON- DEGREE) and professional work. Fellows are selected based on potential for leadership and commitment to public service. The deadline for receipt of applications is June 30, 2009.

The Junior Faculty Development Program provides university instructors with a semester-long opportunity to expand their knowledge and expertise in their academic field by attending classes and working with faculty members at universities in the United States. Individuals may apply for fields in the humanities and social sciences. Each JFDP Fellow will spend a total of five months (January-May) in the United States. Deadline for application should be in early September. Youth Exchange and Study (YES Program) This exchange program offers high school students the opportunity to live with an American family and study in an American school for the academic year for free.
