The Louisiana Purchase June 20, 1803 Mr. Cherry Ms. Kwayzer /Ms. Lubing 7th-Grade Social Studies

Description The United States has just purchased the Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million. This huge new addition stretches north from the Mississippi to the Rocky Mountains and doubles the size of the United States. President Thomas Jefferson has decided to send an expedition to map this region, meet with the numerous Indian tribes living there, examine the animals and plants, and find a route to the Pacific Ocean. You have been chosen to lead this expedition, called Corps of Discovery, and will need to do the following:doublesPresident Thomas Jefferson

Task Develop a plan for exploring Louisiana starting in St. Louis and ending at the Pacific Ocean. Map a proposed route. Give a reason for choosing the route. List the equipment you will need to bring with (Remember, it is the 1800’s). Think of items from the following categories:

Task Continued Identify your winter headquarters. State the date of your departure and the date of your estimated arrival. List the number of people needed for your expedition. Consider some possible problems you might face.
