Grammar as Rhetoric and Style Pronouns

Pronoun Usage When a third-person singular pronoun (he, she, it) could refer to either a male or female, writers have several options. They can: combine the male and female pronouns, using OR; use the plural form of the pronoun, being careful to adjust the rest of the sentence accordingly; or alternate the gender of the pronouns.

Let’s Practice! Correct all errors in the following sentences that result from sexist pronouns or inconsistencies in pronoun person or number

Examples Popular culture once provided us with a common vocabulary, but now you have a hard time keeping up with the jargon. Popular culture once provided us with a common vocabulary, but now WE have a hard time keeping up with the jargon. For a runner to keep up his pace, one must pay attention to nutrition. For a runner to keep up his or her pace, one must pay attention to nutrition.

Examples If one measures her country’s commitment to education by dollars allocated, you can see that it’s not our top priority. Baseball fans pay so much attention to percentages that you almost always have a sense of improbability of an event actually occurring.

Examples Most of the time a teacher tries to tailor writing assignments to interest his students. Everyone is wondering who the next Democratic presidential candidate will be and if he will be a charismatic leader.

Examples A doctor should treat his patients respectfully by listening to them no matter how busy they are. We hoped to get a free pass to the movie, but the mall was so crowded that you didn’t have a chance.

Examples You should try to stop arguments before they start; otherwise, one might become involved in a conflict that gets more complicated than we thought possible. When one is as strong a student as Chong is, you’re not surprised that he passed the bar on his first try.
