OHIO VILLAGE BY: GAVIN Sts Peter & Paul School Wellston, Ohio, USA Ms. Barbara Apsley

WHERE TO FIND THE OHIO VILLAGE Ohio Village is located just off of I-71 on 17th Avenue (exit 111) about four miles north of downtown Columbus in Franklin County.

WHEN THE OHIO VILLAGE WAS BUILT… The village, intended to provide a firsthand view of life in Ohio during the American Civil War, opened July 27, 1974 on 15 acres adjacent to the Ohio Historical Center in north Columbus.American Civil WarJuly

WHAT YOU CAN DISCOVER IN OHIO VILLAGE The 22 buildings that make up the village are a mixture of reproductions and historic structures moved to the site. Among those currently standing are the Town Hall, Print Shop, General Store and Masonic Lodge, Church and Education Center, Pharmacy, Blacksmith Shop, Tinsmith Shop, Broom and Basket Shop, Cabinetmaker/Undertaker's Shop, Harnessmaker's and Weaver's shops, Ladies' Soldiers Aid Society, Village Bakery, Market House, Livery Stable, Schoolhouse, Doctor's Office and Residence, the Ohio Village Bank, the Colonel Crawford Inn and the Elk's Head Tavern.

THE OHIO VILLAGE BAKERY Can't you just smell the breads, pastries and cookies fresh from the kitchen? Yummmmmmmmm!breadscookieskitchen The Village Bakery is open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m

ABOUT OHIO VILLAGE SCHOOL –If a child was needed to help with planting or harvesting, they were kept at home until the work was done, then they went back to school. The older you were the less you were able to attend school because of work at home. Remember-- you had to work LONG hours at home. School was open every day of the year except Sundays and Christmas Day. There were no holiday or vacation days. School was taught at the student's pace, using a series of books, known as the McGuffey Readers, and handwritten lessons found on chalkboards in the room. Kids did their homework on a slate board or with quill pensMcGuffey Readerschalkboardsslate board or with quill pens

ABOUT THE OHIO VILLAGE BASKET SHOP Depending on where you lived in Ohio, you either made your own baskets or went to a professional basket maker. Basket weaving was considered a man's profession. They were made out of many different materials, using several methods. Baskets were named for either their use or what they looked like including wool drying, market, egg, and pie baskets.materialsmethodsBaskets

ABOUT THE OHIO VILLAGE BASEBALL TEAM In 1981, the Ohio Village Muffins began to play base ball (historically two words) as it had been played by the New York Knickerbockers, the first club to write down the rules of what has become modern baseball. It was played in a non-competitive atmosphere where fans cheered for good plays by either side. Come back in time with us as the Ohio Village Muffins and the Diamonds Ladies base ball clubs re-create this gentler time when the sport was young.
