EARTH AIR FIREWATER MOIST HOT COLD DRY EARLY GREEK IDEA OF MATTER Believed in endless divisablity

Democritus: a Greek Philosopher “Happiness resides not in possessions and not in gold; the feeling of happiness dwells in the soul.”

Democritus: A Greek Philosopher who first had the idea that all matter was made up of small parts that could not be subdivided. Atoms: A Greek Idea

“Atomos”- Greek meaning Indivisable Atoms: A Greek Idea Democritus called these tiny parts

MATTER: any substance that has mass and takes up space.

ATOMS: The smallest part of matter. Atoms are the building blocks of matter. If an atom were the size of a baseball the size of an actual baseball would be 3044 miles high!!

Atom Facts 1. # of Electrons = #of Protons 2. # of Negative Charges = # of Positive Charges 3. # of Protons + # of Neutrons = Weight of Atom
