Hereditary Diseases and Disabilities

I. Hereditary Diseases  Diseases caused by abnormal chromosomes or by defective genes from one or both parents

II. Immune Disorders  The immune system does not function properly.

III. Autoimmune Diseases  Diseases where the immune system attacks the cells of the body that the immune system normally protects.

IV. Types of Immune Disorders  Allergy Reaction by the immune system to a harmless substance (pollen, foods, dust)  Asthma Disorder that causes the airways that carry air into the lungs to narrow and become clogged with mucous.

V. Types of Autoimmune Diseases  Arthritis Inflammation of the joints  Multiple Sclerosis (MS) The body attacks myelin, the fatty insulation on nerves in the brain and on the spinal cord

VI. Disabilities  Physical or mental impairments or deficiencies that interfere with a person’s normal functioning.

VII. Types of Disabilities  Vision Macular degeneration, glaucoma.  Hearing Tinnitus, hearing loss.  Movement Paraplegia, quadriplegia, and Parkinson's disease.
