The Elephant Seal By Thien Chau of Mr. Curry’s class

The Elephant Seal Elephant seals are fascinating for several reasons. Elephant seals are big. The largest known Elephant seal is 18 feet, weighing 6000 pounds. There’s not much left since they are hunted for their blubber which is full of oil. It can go three months without eating. They are the deepest divers in the ocean, with a maximum depth recorded at 5,015 feet.

Ecosystem Elephant Seals spend most of their time in water. They can be found throughout the Antarctic region, with some species living farther south than any other mammal. Some Elephant Seals live on Macquarie Island. Some also live in the Antarctic, circumpolar.

Food=Yummy, diet=gross Elephant Seals are carnivores (meat-eaters). It’s diet is fish and squid.Squid is believed to be the elephant seal’s favorite food, although they also eat rays and skates, small sharks, and Pacific hake.

Survival..no don’t kill me The elephant seal are as I told you before hunted for their blubber which holds up to 25 gallons of oil.But they made an incredible comeback, since an alpha male mates up to 50 females. They use their blubber for warmth and hydrodynamic body shape help them survive in an aquatic habitat.

Movement Elephant Seals (male) can dive up to 5000 ft.Males dive longer but females dive deeper. They typically dive up to 20 minutes, but can stay underwater for more than 80 minutes. That's a record for mammals. Sealevel - man 437ft harborseal 676ft sea lion 898ft elephantseal 5000

Conclusion Elephants Seals are amazing creatures. They are great divers and have made a great comeback ever since they were hunted down so much.
