Giant Panda The Giant Panda is an endangered animal, an estimated 1600 individuals in the wild. Pandas live in temperate broadleaf and mixed forests. They can be found mostly in Southwest China (Gansu, Shaanxi and Sichuan provinces) to the East of the Tibetan plateau.

Why is the Giant Panda endangered? Today, the giant panda's future remains uncertain. This peaceful, bamboo-eating member of the bear family faces a number of threats. Its forest habitat, in the mountainous areas of southwest China, is fragmented, the main food source of the Giant Panda, the bamboo plant, is also facing extinction. Giant panda populations are also small and isolated from each other, and thus reproduction is rare. Meanwhile, poaching also remains an ever-present threat.

How can we help to conserve the population of pandas? We can help by refraining from purchasing panda- related products such as their fur. The WWF, or World Wildlife Fund in short, has been helping the government of China to undertake its National Conservation Programme for the giant panda and its habitat. This programme has made significant progress: Reserves for this species cover more than 16,000 km² of forest in and around their habitat.

Borneo Pygmy Elephant The Borneo Pygmy Elephant is an endangered animal, an estimated 1500 or less individuals in the wild. They live in tropical and subtropical moist Broadleaf forests. They can be found in Sabah, Borneo (northeast tip of the island), Malaysia and occasionally into East Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Why is the Borneo Pygmy Elephant endangered? The primary threat to these elephants is the loss of continuous forests. Mammals of their size require large feeding grounds and sizeable male- to female ratios. Shrinking forests have also brought the elephants into more frequent contact with people, increasing human elephant conflict in the region. The elephant is also hunted for its tusks, which has medicinal value.

How can we help to conserve the population of Borneo Pygmy Elephants? We can help by refraining from purchasing products which uses any part of the Borneo Pygmy Elephant, such as their tusk. In 2005, the WWF began studying the pygmy elephants by attaching satellite collars to five of them, making this the largest satellite tracking study of elephants ever conducted in Asia.
