OBJECTIVES GENERAL 1. To teach grammar for communicative purposes. 2. Understand and use the noun in real life situations. DEFINITION OF NOUN The name of a person, place, or a thing is called a noun, in other words noun is a naming word. KINDS OF NOUNS: 1Proper noun -- (P) 2Common noun –(C) 3Collective noun – (C) 4Material noun -- (M) 5Abstract noun –(A) You may remember kinds of nouns by using the formula PC²MA (P– Physics, C– Chemistry, M– Mathematics & A- Accountancy )

PROPER NOUN Proper noun is the name of particular person, thing, animal or place. e.g. Ram, Shyam, Shimla, Delhi. COMMON NOUN Common noun is a name that is shared by everyone, everything of the same kind e.g. students, boys, girls, cows,hen etc. COLLECTIVE NOUN Collective noun is the name of collection or a number of persons animals and things of the same kind e.g. class, team, army,

Material Noun Material noun denotes substance of which the think is consisted of. E.g. gold, silver, copper etc. Abstract Noun Abstract noun names things that we can’t see or touched but only feel and think of e.g. honesty, darkness, sweetness etc. Note: everything which denotes noun is either countable or non-countable. The things that can be counted fall in the category of countable noun and the things which can’t be counted fall in the category of non-countable noun e.g. sugar, milk, water etc are non- countable and chair, pen, books are countable nouns.

Activity 1. Classify the following words in their respective nouns: Gopal, boy, army, iron, Girl, team, honesty, sweetness, teacher, truth, gold etc. Activity 2. Choose the things which fall in the category of countable and non-countable noun: Sugar, coins, tea, men, pulses, fans, honey etc.

Activity 3. Make simple sentences in your own words of the following words: Diamond, Children, Game, Apple, Honesty, Fleet, Silver, Elephant, Zoo. Home Assignment Underline the nouns in the following paragraph: Rahul reached the railway station at 10 o’clock. He bought a ticket and went to the platform. The train arrived. There was a great rush and he got a very comfortable seat. When the train moved it was the pleasure to see the trees, houses and electric polls running backwards.
