National Anthem of India Languages: Hindi English 1/16 1

God Defend New Zealand 2/16 ‘TRUTH ALONE TRIUMPHS’ The National Emblem of India is derived from the time of the Emperor Ashoka. The Emblem is a replica of the Lion of Samath, near Varanasi in Utta Pradesh. The Lion Capital was erected in the third century BC by the Emperor Ashoka to mark the spot where the Buddha first proclaimed his message of peace and emancipation to the four quarters of the universe The National Emblem is therefore a symbol of contemporary India’s affirmation of its ancient commitment to world peace and goodwill. The four lions (one hidden from view) - symbolizing power, courage and confidence rest on a circula abacus. The abacus is girded by four smaller animals – guardians of the four directions: the Lion of the North, the Horse of the West, the Bull of the South, the Elephant of the East. The abacus rests on the lotus in full bloom, exemplifying the fountain head of life and creative inspiration. The motto ‘Satyameva Jayate’ inscribed below the emblem in Devanagri script means ‘Truth alone triumphs’. 26 January 195 2

4/16 Thou art the ruler of the minds of all people, Dispenser of India's destiny. Thy name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sind, Gujarat and Maratha, Of the Dravida and Odisha and Bengal; It echoes in the hills of the Vindhyas and Himalayas, mingles in the music of Jamuna and Ganges and is chanted by the waves of the Indian Sea. They pray for thy blessings and sing thy praise. The saving of all people waits in thy hand, Thou dispenser of India's destiny. Victory, victory, victory to thee. 3

7/16 CONVICTION = COURAGE > VICTORY Rabindranath Tagore 1911 in Benagali Tagore later wrote, "A certain high official in His Majesty's service, who was also my friend, had requested that I write a song of felicitation towards the Emperor. The request simply amazed me. It caused a great stir in my heart. In response to that great mental turmoil, I pronounced the victory in Jana Gana Mana of that Bhagya Vidhata (ed. God of Destiny) of India who has from age after age held steadfast the reins of India's chariot through rise and fall, through the straight path and the curved. That Lord of Destiny, that Reader of the Collective Mind of India, that Perennial Guide, could never be George V, George VI, or any other George. Even my official friend understood this about the song. After all, even if his admiration for the crown was excessive, he was not lacking in simple common sense." [8] [8] 6

8/16 INDIA HONOURS GOD Tagore wrote a letter to the Emperor, stating the mentor and creator of Bharath(India) mentioned in the song is not King George V butIndiaKing George V the God himself. The copy of the letter can be found in his autobiography and Jana Gana Mana (hymn). [1] "Jana Gana Mana" was officially adopted by the Constituent Assembly as the Indian national anthem on 24 January [2]Jana Gana Mana (hymn) [1] [2] 7

Connection National Anthem of India to Nurses… Depression, Burnout, Suicide? How may a deeper understanding of the National Anthem help to reduce and prevent the current global crisis in Nursing and the Health Services?

13/16 9 What are the three factors that have been highlighted from the National Anthem that do not take priority in the practice of Nursing? How may these contribute to depression and burnout and even suicide?

India Honours God

CONVICTION India’s Independence stands on conviction Nurse’s misguided conviction wobbles on fear of man instead of on the fear of disobedience. Independence based on conviction gives courage that leads to Victory. How may Nurses regain courage that leads to victory based on Truth? 11

11/16 12 Identify the key factor in the National Anthem… That will give Nurses the confidence and assurance each one needs to regain moral strength that leads to conviction based on reality and truth that will lead to victory?

Nurses want to Honour God BUT have been constantly handicapped by many factors that have prevented this becoming a reality in Nursing and therefore in the Health Services. Delhi is the Capital of this great Nation It is time for us to start talking to God and to each other. 13

THE GOD OF TRUTH Each Nurse has direct access and immediate connection to The Almighty Sovereign God The Source of all Truth The Provider of courage The only Sustainer of mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health. 14

8/16 INDIA HONOURS GOD Let us honour God now by asking His guidance and Counsel so that we can all receive His TRUTH And The courage to practice and apply it In our Nursing Services 15

The Power of God’s Grace in Nursing 16
