Read to Succeed Focus Read to Succeed places volunteers in local schools to focus on improving early grade reading skills 3 rd grade is a focal point because: Until 3 rd grade, learn to read; after 3 rd grade, read to learn “Academic success, as defined by high school graduation, can be predicted with reasonable accuracy by knowing someone's reading skill at the end of grade 3 (Slavin et al., 1994).” Phase 1-Read to Succeed

The Next Step LSC Results Our goal is to have children leave third grade reading at grade level or better. The IRead test is Indiana’s assessment for third grade reading. This chart show the percentage gain in IRead scores for schools with Read to Succeed vs. those without: Additionally, a study at Glen Acres Elementary showed that 70% of students with Read to Succeed volunteers improved their attendance and 66% were referred to the office fewer times.
