Numeracy Counts

Think about this? A coat costs £50 and is reduced by 20% in a sale. A few weeks later that price is increased by 20%. Does the coat now cost: a) £50 b) Less than £50

What does it mean to fail? It's time to redefine the meaning of the word failure. On the road to invention, failures are just problems that have yet to be solved. James Dyson

When do we learn? We all fail at things every day, its what we do about it that counts. If we didn’t fail we would learn far less. Research shows that our minds do not have a fixed intelligence – we can affect how bright we are! Research shows we learn best when we challenge ourselves.

Why does it count? Adults with low numeracy skills are twice as likely to be unemployed as those with good numeracy skills. Adults with good numeracy skills earn on average 26% more during their lifetime Numeracy is everywhere in life e.g. shopping, buying a house, cooking, measuring, wages, news stories…………….

So why should I be worried?

Jobs EVERY job requires some level of numeracy! Challenge – can you find one which doesn’t

Maths is not important!

What you can do… - Challenge yourself. - Celebrate mistakes (and then learn from them) - Use MB Numeracy as a starting point: mountsbay.org/blogs/mbnumeracy - Weekly Puzzle - Mangahigh.com - Mymaths.co.uk
