MATTER AND ITS CHANGES

What are PHYSICAL and CHEMICAL changes? Sometimes we eat an apple right off the tree. Sometimes we change tree. Sometimes we change the apple before we eat it. How can the apple before we eat it. How can an apple be changed? an apple be changed?

You can change apples in many ways. You can change apples in many ways.

Apples are matter. Just as apples can be changed, so can all matter. Matter can be changed in many ways. Think about paper. Think about paper. Can you change paper? Can you change paper?

YES! You can rip it, Stack it, Shred it. You can even soak paper, But have you changed the paper?

Cutting, shredding, or painting paper can change the shape, size, and color, can change the shape, size, and color, but it is still paper. but it is still paper. It is not a new substance.

Think about clay. Clay be changed just like paper. Pull it, shape it, mix the colors together. The size, shape, and color have changed, but clay is still clay. but clay is still clay.

Changing the paper or the clay is an example of a PHYSICAL CHANGE. A physical change is a change in which a new substance is NOT formed.

Changing a physical property, such as size, shape, texture, color, or mass, is a PHYSICAL CHANGE.

CHEMICAL CHANGES A chemical change means a new substance is formed. substance is formed. Substances are changed into entirely new substances.

This candle is a pink cylinder. This candle is a pink cylinder. It has a white wick that It has a white wick that you can twist or cut. you can twist or cut. When you light it smoke is When you light it smoke is given off as the given off as the wick burns. wick burns. The smoke is The smoke is a new substance! a new substance!

The smoke is a new substance. The smoke is a new substance. Burning created a chemical change. Burning created a chemical change. A chemical change happened when a A chemical change happened when a substance changed into a new substance changed into a new substance. substance. There is smoke. There is smoke. The wick has turned black. The wick has turned black. You have a chemical change. You have a chemical change.

Rusting is a chemical change. If you leave your bike out in the weather the bike gets wet and begins to rust. The rust was not there when you bought the bike. The rust is a new substance.

The broken glass is a physical change. The bent metal is a physical change. The rust is a chemical change.

Exposed metal on this old car reacts with oxygen to form rust. Exposed metal on this old car reacts with oxygen to form rust. Is this a physical or chemical change? How do you know? How do you know?

As rotting leaves break down they release a gas that smells. release a gas that smells. They also give off heat. It is a physical change or a chemical change? How do you know?

Physical or Chemical? How can you tell?

A fungus breaks down the orange. The orange gets soft. The mold you see and the The mold you see and the gas you smell show that gas you smell show that a chemical change has taken place.

Physical or Chemical Bent nail Melting ice cream Fried egg Sharpening a pencil Toast Cut veggies Rusting Burnt match

CHEMICAL CHANGES CLUES Color: when you toast bread it turns brown or black if you burn it. Smell: as plants and animals decay, they release gasses that smell. Heat: firewood gets hot when you burn it. Substance given off: when you light a candle smoke rises into the air.

What about water? Water can exist in all three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. Boiling water makes steam. But this is not a chemical change. But this is not a chemical change. Steam is not a new substance. Steam is just water in a different state.

Exploding fireworks Exploding fireworks are a chemical are a chemical change. change. The chemicals in The chemicals in the shells begin the shells begin to burn creating to burn creating the sparkles we see. the sparkles we see.

THINK ABOUT PIZZA PHYSICAL OR CHEMICAL

Pizza has yeast in the crust to make the dough rise. A gas is created that makes bubbles in the dough. in the dough. The creating of bubbles tell you it is a ___________ change.

Push, pull, and shape Push, pull, and shape the dough into a crust. the dough into a crust. This is a _____ change. This is a _____ change. A red sauce is made A red sauce is made of crushed tomatoes of crushed tomatoes and spices. and spices. This is a ____ change.

Shredding cheese is a _________ change. Cut some veggies to put on top. Cutting is a _____ change.

The pizza gets bubbly hot and turns brown. You can smell the dough baking. This is a __________ change.

Cutting the pizza is a _____ change. Cutting the pizza is a _____ change. Your stomach juices start to break down the pizza as you eat. Your stomach juices start to break down the pizza as you eat. A ________ change is happening. A ________ change is happening.
