Ride-Along HFD Explorers Expectations

Scheduling A Ride It is mandatory to complete one ride-along a month, at minimum. An Explorer must do their first three rides with one of the Explorer Advisors. (FF Juarez, FF Beal) After the Explorer’s three rides with an advisor, if they are given permission, they may begin riding with different crews.

Before A Ride-Along The Explorer must make sure they have their turnouts, Class B, and PT gear ready before their ride. The Explorer will bring: Money for food (also pack food/snacks) Study materials Any questions or skills you would like to work on Breakfast/Treats for the crew as a “Thank You” for welcoming you into their Station for the day.

The Morning of… Arrive Early (7:15am)*** Introduce yourself to the crew going off duty as well as the oncoming crew. Help with morning chores. Start the coffee. Ask the Captain which unit you will be assigned to for the day. Check out the rig you are assigned to. Always wear BSI (gloves). Make sure there is an extra traffic vest for you on the unit you are assigned to.

Daily Chores Always help with daily chores. Chores may vary between stations so make sure you find out what needs to be done. For Example: Clean the bathrooms Vacuum Empty the trash Wash windows Wipe down counters

Throughout The Day… ***Answer the phone. “Station (#), Explorer (Name)” Always offer to help prepare meals. Clean the dishes after every meal. Periodically check the sink for dishes and see if the dishwasher needs to be emptied. Check to see if towels need to be cleaned or folded. Clean the weight room. Sweep and mop the floors.

After Dinner… Clean the dishes. Wipe down the counters and stove. Sweep and mop the floor. Take out the trash. Load/Empty the dishwasher. Help with any other cleanup usually done after dinner.

Overnight Stay If you get the privilege to do a 24 hour ride-along, make sure you wake up EARLY. Start the coffee. Empty the dishwasher after everyone is awake. Help with the morning chores. Thank the crew for letting you ride-along.

REMEMBER… DO NOT HIDE DURING YOUR RIDE-ALONG. A RULE OF THUMB, EXPLORERS ARE TO BE SEEN AND NOT HEARD. FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE VERY IMPORTANT. IF YOU HAVE TO STUDY, STUDY AT THE KITCHEN TABLE. THIS IS THE TIME TO ASK QUESTIONS. NEVER SIT IN THE RECLINERS *** NEVER SIT AND WATCH TV*** YOUR RIDE WILL BE EVERYTHING YOU PUT INTO IT. HAVE FUN!
