Prewriting Stage by Amy Southers PLO – The students will correctly complete the Five Senses Graphic Organizer as part of the prewriting stage of the writing process.

Georgia Performance Standard ELA2W1 The student demonstrates competency in the writing process. The student h. Prewrites to generate ideas orally.

What is Five Senses Poetry? A poem that uses the five senses (hear, smell, taste, touch, & feel) to describe a topic. It usually has five lines but may have more.

Structure I see I hear I smell I taste..... I feel..... I know...(optional)

Five Senses Prewriting Students will brainstorm topics for their poem. The form is Five Senses Poetry. The audience is the class. The purpose is to describe something.

Prewriting Stage During this stage the students get their ideas on paper. Students will complete the Five Senses Graphic Organizer on chosen topic.

Practice Activity Have the class decide on a topic. Using share-the-pen, the class will complete a graphic organizer for five senses poetry.

Assessment Class will choose a topic. Students will individually complete a Five Senses Poetry graphic organizer for the agreed upon topic.

Drafting Stage by Ellen Stone PLO – The student will demonstrate competency in the writing process by creating a draft of a five sense poem using a graphic organizer.

Five Senses poetry is a form of writing which allows students to communicate and express ideas creatively. It allows students to use background knowledge by allowing them to express their feelings about a particular topic. Five Senses Poetry

Structure The first line in the poem will describe the topic of the poem. The following lines will describe or explain how the student views or feels about the topic. The poem usually contains five lines.

Five Senses Drafting The drafting stage will involve students using the graphic organizer completed earlier. Students will begin to write sentences explaining their ideas and emotions using the their five senses to describe and express their ideas of a topic.

Example Watermelons Watermelons are red in the inside. Watermelons smell sweet as mangos. Watermelons feel sticky and cold. Watermelons sound squishy when you eat them. Practice Activity Students will use graphic organizer to begin writing poem. Students will use first line of poem to introduce the topic. Students will continue to write sentences describing how they feel about the topic using their five senses. Student will complete five lines in poem.

Assessment Students will write a rough draft of their poem using their completed graphic organizer from the prewriting assessment.
