Implementation of TRIPS Flexibilities in National IP Legislation for Strengthening Access to Medicines in Seychelles

Workshop objectives To provide a context how IP policies and the new Industrial Property legislation can impact on Access to Medicines in Seychelles by: Disseminating the comments raised in the lawyers’ meeting Discussing the recommendations with stakeholders from government, health, trade and IP officials, academics, civil society and private sector. To develop a joint understanding of how Seychelles can support future access to medicines, so that these principles can be included in national IP, trade, health and medicines policies.

Workshop objectives (2) To develop a stakeholder coordination mechanism to map the way forward and to coordinate the implementation of strategies for taking full advantage of TRIPS flexibilities. To agree on TORs for a multi-stakeholder Technical Working Group on IP and Access to Medicines in Seychelles that will both drive the process and oversee the agenda.

Trade, TRIPS and Access to Medicines Supports SADC PBP TRIPS activities since 2012 SADC member states adopted Sept 2012 concept note 8 member states requested support to review their national IP/patent legislation So far 5 national workshops were held: Botswana, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Lesotho All accepted recommendations to amend Patent legislation Seychelles is 6 th ; Swaziland will be 7 th (October 2014) Next week Regional Lawyers meeting, and Discussion with SADC member states of a strategic plan to produce future generics in SADC that India can no longer easily supply since 2005
