Apuntes 9-10 de febrero El subjuntivo con conjunciones The subjunctive with conjunctions Recogemos la basura en las calles para que estén limpias. We pick up the trash in the streets so that they’re clean.

Conjunctions are words or phrases that connect clauses in a sentence. Certain conjunctions introduce adverbial clauses, which describe how, why, when, and where an action takes place.

The following conjunctions always require the subjunctive in the following clause: a menos que – unless antes (de) que – before con tal (de) que – provided that en caso (de) que – in case para que – so (that) sin que – without

Vamos a hacer un picnic a menos que llueva. We’re going to have a picnic unless it rains. Tengo que limpiar la casa antes de que regresen mis padres. I have to clean up the house before my parents return. Te voy a dar un poco de dinero en caso de que lo necesites. I’m going to give you a little money in case you need it.

The following conjunctions require the subjunctive only with future, anticipated actions or events. If the actions or events are habitual or past, use the indicative. cuando – when después de que – after en cuanto – as soon as tan pronto como – as soon as hasta que – until

Future (anticipated) action (subjunctive): Puedes salir tan pronto como termines tu trabajo. You can leave as soon as you finish your work. Habitual action (indicative): Sales tan pronto como terminas tu trabajo. You leave as soon as you finish your work. Past action (preterite indicative): Saliste tan pronto como terminaste tu trabajo. You left as soon as you finished your work.

With antes de, después de, para, and sin use the infinitive if there is no change of subject. Tenemos que comprar leche antes de volver a casa. We have to buy milk before returning home. ¿Cómo puedo ganar dinero sin trabajar? How can I earn money without working?
