Some War background from Hemingway’s life: - Hemingway tried to enlist in the US army, but was rejected because of his poor vision. -He joined the Italian forces as an ambulance driver. -The day he arrived, an ammunitions factory exploded. Hemingway had to carry mutilated bodies to a makeshift morgue.

The horrors of war: - Several weeks later, he was injured when an Austrian mortar shell exploded and fragments lodged in his leg. -He was awarded the Italian Silver Medal for carrying wounded soldiers out of harms way despite his own injuries.

Inspiration for “Soldier’s Home” ●Hemingway’s story “Soldier’s Home” conveys his feelings of frustration and shame upon returning home to a town and to parents who still had a romantic notion of war and who didn’t understand the psychological impact the war had had on their son. ●What diagnosis do many people receive as the result of being in a war situation upon their return?

Title Examination Thinking about your knowledge of apostrophes, what are the two implications you can draw from “Soldier’s Home?” *Think about this while reading
