Endurance: The story of an ordinary man who came to be know as a great leader 17 forced out of their home with family 22, he lost his job as a store clerk 23, he ran for state legislature and lost 27, he had a nervous breakdown 31, he was defeated in his attempt to become an elector 35, he had been defeated twice while running for Congress 39 he lost his re-election bid 42, he was rejected as a prospective land officer 45, he ran for the Senate and lost 49, he ran for Senate and lost again. 51, he was elected the President of the United States of America

Leaders and Leadership A leader is an ordinary person who gets extraordinary things done. Leadership is the ability to unleash the extraordinary potential in ordinary people. Leadership is everyone’s business.

Leadership Skills A set of observable skills that can be learned, practiced, strengthened and enhanced. –Model the way –Inspire a shared vision –Challenge the process –Enable others to act –Encourage the heart

Model the way Find your own voice –Clarify your values (personal values or societal values) What you care about What inspires you What challenges you What give you energy What encourages you Align your actions with your values –Practice what you preach –Your action must be consistent with your word –Do what you say you will do

Inspire a shared vision Envision an uplifting future and ennobling future Enlist others in a common vision Create appealing and shared aspiration

Challenge the process Seek out opportunity for change Participate in growth and improvement Experiment things –Practice builds competence and competence builds confidence Take risks Generate small wins Learn from mistakes

Enable others to act Give the lego away Foster collaboration Promote cooperative goals Build trust Share power

Encourage the hearts Recognize the contribution of others Show appreciation for individual achievements Stop and celebrate every success, no matter how little it is.
