Presentation transcript:

Shoulder joints AbdomenMusclesThoracicInjuriesGood Luck

Describe the location of the clavicle bone?

Directly above the 1 st rib. Articulates with the sternum and scapula.

What nerve innervates the diaphragm?

Phrenic Nerve

How many ribs are there in the human body? (Pairs)

12

What is the main purpose of bile?

To break down fats

What is a cholecystectomy?

Removal of the gallbladder

What is a strain?

Injury to a muscle or tendon (Stretch or tear of muscle fibers)

What teams are in the final four for the Men’s NCAA March Madness?

Connecticut, Florida, Wisconsin, and Kentucky

Name one rotator cuff muscle?

Supraspinatus Infraspinatus Teres Minor Subscapularis

What organ can become enlarged due to a viral infection? Name the virus and the organ?

The Spleen and Mononucleosis

What is the medical term for a “Separated Shoulder”?

Acromionclavicular Sprain

Name one muscle that is responsible for internal rotation of the shoulder?

Subscapularis

Name a group of muscles that is responsible for shoulder flexion, extension and abduction. Hint: Group contains 3 muscles.

The Deltoids Anterior Deltoid, Middle Deltoid and Posterior Deltoid

How can a SC Sprain become potentially life threatening?

If the clavicle dislocates posteriorly it can puncture a lung.

What causes a winging scapula?

Damage to the long thoracic nerve which innervates the serratus anterior muscle.

Name 3 questions that could be asked to help prevent SDS?

Have you ever had chest pain during exercise? Have you ever fainted? Has anyone in your family under 35 y/o ever died suddenly? Has anyone in your family been diagnosed with a thickened heart? Does anyone in your family have Marfan’s Syndrome?

What is Marfan’s Syndrome?

Abnormality to the body’s connective tissue.

What do our ribs articulate with posteriorly?

The thoracic vertebrae (Costal facets on thoracic vertebrae)

What is the medical term for “The shoulder joint”?

The Glenohumeral Joint

Name the two joints that clavicle helps to form in the shoulder.

SC Joint and AC Joint

This joint is not a true shoulder joint.

Scapulothoracic Joint

Name three things that muscles are responsible for in the shoulder.

1.Aide in stability 2.Allow the shoulder to move 3.Provide protection

The thoracic cavity contains the heart. Name and describe one injury that we discussed that can occur to the heart.

Marfan’s Syndrome: Connective tissue disorder-weak aorta. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy: Excessive thickening of cardiac muscle with no evidence of chamber enlargement. Anomalous Origin of the Coronary Artery: One of the two coronary arteries originates in a different site which can lead to obstructions.

Name the lobes of the right and left lung AND what is special about the left lung?

Right Lung: Superior, Middle, and Inferior Lobes Left Lung: Superior and Inferior Lobes. Contains the cardiac notch.

Name 3 functions of the Liver.

1.Cleans the body by filtering toxins. 2.Makes proteins for normal blood clotting. 3.Produces bile to break down fats. 4.Plays a major role in metabolism.

What is the function of the gallbladder AND what can cause injury to this process that requires removal of the gallbladder?

Function: To store bile and then release the bile to aid in fat digestion. Gallstones can block the ducts that provide the pathway for the bile to enter the intestines. These gallstones are harden deposits of digestive fluid and are very painful. This can lead to a cholecystectomy.

What muscle lies between the shoulder and the elbow and is usually being tested during a Speeds Test?

The Biceps Brachii

Describe the 3 categories of ribs in the human body. Describe each category and the number of ribs included.

True Ribs: Joined to the sternum by costal cartilage – 1-7 False Ribs: Cartilage joins at 7 th rib before sternum Floating Ribs: Unattached but do have muscle attachment

Name the special tests that are used to test for a shoulder dislocation/subluxation AND for a glenoid labrum tear.

Apprehension Test and Grind Test

Who do the Cleveland Indians play against for their home opener this Friday?

Minnesota Twins

What are the names of Kenston High School’s team physicians?

Dr. David Gurd, Dr. Alan Gurd, and Dr. Tim Joyce

A football player complains of pain in his right shoulder. States that he fell and tried to catch himself during a game. Pain 9/10. AROM limited for shoulder flexion and extension. Point tender over tip of shoulder. Positive AC joint compression test. Positive speeds test. Positive swelling and eccyhmosis. What is the injury? What is the care/tx?
