Some Like It Hot Funniest movie of all time

Made in 1959 Directed by Billy Wilder Also directed the first “Casino Royale” Written by Wilder and I.E.L. Diamond. Marilyn Monroe stars as Sugar Kane Also starred in The Seven Year Itch Tony Curtis stars as Joe ‘Josephine’ Also starred in Rosemary’s Baby Jack Lemmon stars as Jerry ‘Daphne’ Also starred in Grumpy Old Men Billy Wilder originally wanted Frank Sinatra for Jerry/Daphne

Wilder wanted Mitzi Gaynor not Marilyn Monroe for Sugar role Gaynor won acclaim for role in South Pacific Monroe wanted film to be in color but Wilder wanted Black and White. Monroe took 47 takes to get the line, “It’s me, Sugar.” correct. After 30 th take Wilder wrote the line on a chalkboard for her. During 1 st preview people laughed so hard at Lemmon’s announcement of his engagement that they had to re-shoot to add pauses. Wilder did not approve of Monroe’s wild behavior and did not invite her to the wrap party.

All of the resort scene were shot at the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego. Wilder did this so that Monroe, who was having personal problems, could have a place to live for the entire shoot and not have to be transported there. For Curtis’ stint as a millionaire in the film he imitated Cary Grant. Danny Kaye and Bob Hope were originally also thought of for the two male leads. #1 Funniest movie on AFI’s list of 100 funniest movie and #14 on AFI’s 100 best movie of all time.

Line, “Well, nobody’s perfect.” voted as AFI’s #48 on the 100 best movie quotes list. Monroe was pregnant during the filming thus she looked considerably heavier. Curtis’ female voice is partially dubbed over by Paul Frees because Curtis couldn’t maintain high pitch very long. Monroe had such trouble with her lines that you can see her in the “farewell” conversation with Joe reading her lines every so often as if from a cue card. Working title was “Not Tonight Josephine”

When Curtis and Lemmon first put on the female costume they walked around the studio lot to see if they could pass as women. #9 Greatest film of all time on Entertainment Weekly’s list of all time best movie Jerry Lewis offered role of Daphne but didn’t want to dress as a woman. Lemmon received an Oscar nomination for this role. Wilder would make Monroe walk from one side of the frame to another when she flubbed a line. Many report this is what cause her miscarriage.

Porgy and Bess was being filmed right next door so Sammy Davis Jr., Sidney Poitier, and Dorothy Dandridge would visit often. On it’s original release Kansas banned the film due to the cross-dressing. The famous line “Nobody’s perfect.” was not intended to make the final cut. Monroe’s vocal coach was Judy Garland. Budget was $2,883,848 Won Oscar’s for Best Costume Design and nominated for Actor, Art Direction, Cinematographer, Director, and Writing.
