Sir Winston Churchill By Charlotte Sofranek “It was the nation and the race dwelling all round the globe that had the lion's heart. I had the luck to be called upon to give the roar.” – Winston Churchill By Charlotte Sofranek

Background Information Winston Churchill was born on November 30, 1874 in Oxfordshire, England. He was the child of Lord Randolph Churchill and the American heiress Jennie Jerome. Young Churchill received his early education in many different private schools where he failed to perform successfully. Churchill’s parents finally sent him to a military academy at Sandhurst where he excelled. At the academy he was taught the courage and determination he continued to show throughout his life.

Escape from Pretoria During the Anglo- Boer War in 1899, Winston Churchill served as a war correspondent for Britain. He traveled to Africa where he was captured by Louis Botha, the future Prime Minister of South Africa. Churchill, along with many other British officers, was taken to a prison in Pretoria. On the night of December 12th he escaped the prison and made his way safely back to England by hiding on numerous trains. This act of courage earned Churchill instant world fame.

Parliament Winston Churchill began his political career in as Undersecretary for Colonies in Parliament from 1905- 1908. He continued his career in Parliament for over 60 years holding more than seven different positions including: Left: Winston Churchill in his office Right: Winston Churchill as First Lord of Admiralty President of Board and Trade, 1908- 1910 Home Secretary, 1910- 1911 First Lord of Admiralty, 1911- 1915 Minister of Munitions, 1916- 1918 Secretary for War and Air, 1919- 1921 Secretary for colonies, 1921- 1922 Chancellor of Exchequer, 1924- 1929

Prime Minister of England Winston Churchill was elected Prime Minister of England in May 1940 after the former Prime Minister ,Neville Chamberlain, resigned. Churchill held this office for five more years. During these years he was responsible for leading his country through the darkest time Britain had ever seen. Winston Churchill successfully organized and inspired the British people as they defended their land against Nazi Germany during World War II.

World War II Winston Churchill is considered one of the greatest world leaders of all time. As Prime Minister of England during World War II it was Churchill’s responsibility to lead the country to victory even when Hitler’s army had already conquered France and most of Western Europe. Winston Churchill spoke to the people of England and inspired them to fight on and to never lose hope. He embodied England’s will and pride throughout the long years of WWII. “You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival.”

Bestselling Author and Nobel Prize Winston Churchill was awarded a Nobel Prize by the Nobel Committee in 1953. He was crowned as a historian and writer of memoirs. Winston Churchill also earned the acclaimed title of “bestselling author” for his novel, Memoirs of the Second World War. This novel describes the experience Churchill went through as Prime Minister of England during WWII.

Retirement After many years of service in Parliament and as Prime Minister, Winston Churchill finally retired from politics in 1955 at the age of 81. He had decided that he had had enough and wanted to enjoy the rest of his life doing the things he enjoyed the most. For the last ten years of his life Churchill became famous for his paintings and his outstanding works of literature. “I am never going to have anything more to do with politics or politicians. When this war is over I shall confine myself entirely to writing and painting.”

The Great Winston Churchill Winston Churchill will always be remembered as a courageous soldier, influential leader, and an acclaimed author. Even when faced with the most challenging obstacles, Churchill never gave a thought to defeat. His pride and respect he had for Britain and all of its people encouraged them and gave them the strength and will to fight on. Winston Churchill never gave up no matter the circumstances, which has made him one of the most influential leaders of all time. “History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it.”
