Presentation transcript:

Interior design is the process of shaping the interior space, through the changing of spatial volume as well as surface treatment. Not to be confused with interior decoration, interior design draws on aspects of environmental psychology, architecture, and product design in addition to traditional decoration.

Interior designers must have organizational skills and business know-how, as well as great taste and artistic ability. It comes as little surprise, then, that getting an interior design degree is quickly becoming essential for those wishing to enter the interior design job market. A degree is also a licensure requirement in many states.

 Interior Designer, Commercial Design  Interior Designer, Residential Design  Company Representative  Product-line Representative  Factory Representative  Store Manager  Space Planner

The work environment is usually quite pleasant; however, much time is spent away from headquarters, meeting with clients, contractors, or shopping. Designers must drive in all types of weather and sometimes work in buildings under construction. They often carry heavy, bulky sample books and sometimes have to climb ladders.

The educational requirements are evaluated as follows: - 5 Years: At least 150 semester credits (of which 90 or more are interior design related) 225 quarter credits (of which 135 or more are interior design related). - 4 Years: At least 120 semester credits (of which 60 or more are interior design related) 180 quarter credits (of which 90 or more are interior design related). - 3 Years: At least 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits of interior design related coursework. - 2 Years: At least 40 semester credits or 60 quarter credits of interior design related coursework."

Interior design careers require certification and licensing. After all, you sometimes make substantial alterations to existing structures. Unless you already know the do's and do not's of lead-based paints, then you will definitely need some formal training. The good news is that there are a lot of potential clients out there. Every school, hospital, apartment, house, and business could use designers skills at some time or another. This trend will only continue in the years to come. Urban renewal, suburban sprawl, and an increasing population basically guarantee that there will be plenty of business for qualified interior designers. Careers in this field are pretty secure.
