HALLOWE’EN  Halloween happens every year on 31 st October  The proper name for Hallowe’en is ‘All Hallows Eve’ this is because it is the day before the Christian special day of ‘All Saints Day’ on the 1 st of November when people think about and pray for the people they know who have died.  At Hallowe’en there are many traditions which people have continued for many years – read about some of them on these pages:

HALLOWE’EN TRADITIONS  Halloween Beliefs Halloween Beliefs  Dressing up Dressing up  Pumpkin lanterns Pumpkin lanterns  Trick or treat visits to houses Trick or treat visits to houses  Halloween pictures Halloween pictures

HALLOWE’EN BELIEFS  In the olden days people believed that on Halloween night when the nights became dark and winter was on the way was the night when spooky spirits, ghosts and ghouls could come out and roam around.

DRESSING UP  People believed that on Hallowe’en night if you were dressed up as a spooky person such as a witch, a ghost, a skeleton or a vampire, that the real ghosties and witches would not know and they would leave you alone.

PUMPKIN LANTERNS  People made lanterns to scare away any evil spirits. The first lanterns were made out of turnips and later on pumpkins.  People who did not have turnips or pumpkins would sometimes use candles or light a bonfire.

TRICK OR TREAT  People used to believe that anything that went wrong with their home, their animals or pets was the fault of evil and mischievous spirits and ghosties.  Children now visit houses dressed up as those spooky characters saying trick or treat. They pretend that they will play tricks if they do not get a treat.  Treats can be sweeties, fruit or money
