UNIT 11 spelling SOFT C – HARD C

Screech has something to teach us!

What does Screech want to tell us? Boys, I want to tell you about a trick that helps me with the letter C when I see it in a word or when I am writing words! You probably know that the letter C can make two sounds: /k/ and /s/. Today we will learn how to tell which sound the C is making by looking at the letter that follows it!

nice cider Here is the trick… If you see the letters e, i, or y after the letter C, it makes the soft /s/ sound! Look at these words! nice /s/ cider This c says /s/ This c says

Let’s look at these words… Because this c does not have an e, i, or y after it, it says - Because this c has an e after it, it follows the rule and says- /k/ /s/ cent camp

C /s/ /k/ y i e Remember… If…. is followed by any other letter it says or e C is followed by any other letter /k/ it says

Let’s find the c in the words below and decide what sound it makes! cell cube /s/ Nice Work! /k/ Does this c say /s/ or /k/? face clap /s/ /k/ cylinder cot /s/ /k/

Find the words that have a soft c sound! These words have a C that says /k/ because the letter after C is NOT e, i, or y! center circle /s/ corn cute /k/ juice cat cycle
