About Science Prof OnlineScience Prof Online PowerPoint Resources Science Prof Online (SPO) is a free science education website that provides fully-developed Virtual Science Classrooms, science-related PowerPoints, articles and images. The site is designed to be a helpful resource for students, educators, and anyone interested in learning about science. The SPO Virtual Classrooms offer many educational resources, including practice test questions, review questions, lecture PowerPoints, video tutorials, sample assignments and course syllabi. New materials are continually being developed, so check back frequently, or follow us on Facebook (Science Prof Online) or Twitter (ScienceProfSPO) for updates. Many SPO PowerPoints are available in a variety of formats, such as fully editable PowerPoint files, as well as uneditable versions in smaller file sizes, such as PowerPoint Shows and Portable Document Format (.pdf), for ease of printing. Images used on this resource, and on the SPO website are, wherever possible, credited and linked to their source. Any words underlined and appearing in blue are links that can be clicked on for more information. PowerPoints must be viewed in slide show mode to use the hyperlinks directly. Several helpful links to fun and interactive learning tools are included throughout the PPT and on the Smart Links slide, near the end of each presentation. You must be in slide show mode to utilize hyperlinks and animations. Biological Classification The Basics Image: Biological classification diagram, Peter HalaszBiological classification diagramFrom ScienceProfOnline.com, free science education website.ScienceProfOnline.com

Classifying Living Things Biological classificationBiological classification provides meaningful groupings of organisms based on evolutionary relationships. To learn which organisms are most closely related, evidence is gathered from: –Fossil record –Comparative homologies Similarity of anatomy / physiology due to shared ancestry –Comparative sequencing of ___________ among organisms Image: Phylogenetic Tree, Eric Gaba, NASA Astrobiology institute.Phylogenetic TreeFrom ScienceProfOnline.com, free science education website.ScienceProfOnline.com Eubacteria Archaea Eukaryota

Three Domains ___________ - True bacteria - ProkaryotesProkaryotes Exs. Streptococcus pneumoniae Escherichia coli ___________ - Were thought to be same as Bacteria until recently. - Prokaryotes Ex. Extremophiles ____________ - All eukayotic organisms.eukayotic Fall into 4 Kingdoms: Protista – Ex. algae Fungi – Ex. mushroom Plantae – Ex. The hierarchy of biological classification has eight major taxonomic ranks which encompass all known life. How about a trick to help us remember them? And a little “Classification Rap” to help as well?biological classificationClassification Rap Image: Biological classification diagram, Peter HalaszBiological classification diagram Word to your Mat’! Domain: ________ Prokaryotic Lack peptidoglycan Binary fission Many live in extreme environments Not known to cause disease in humans or animals Had been considered bacteria until examination of their unique rRNA sequences. Domain: _________ Five major groups that interest microbiologists: _______________ (some can cause infectious disease) _______________ (some can cause infectious disease) _______________ (worms that can cause infectious disease) _______________ (DO NOT cause infectious disease in humans) _______________ (DO NOT cause infectious disease in humans) Includes both human pathogens and organisms vital for human life. __________ _____________: A system of naming organisms first proposed in the 1700s by Swedish scientist Carolus Linnaeus. In binomial nomenclature, each organism is given two Latinized names:binomial nomenclature -__________________ (genus, pl. genera) -__________________ (species) Q: Why does everything need to have a name? And why a universally understood name? Genus names are always capitalized; species names are lower case. Genus and species names are always italicized or underlined when written.
