Differences in Northern Colonies than Southern Colonies. Terrible soil, no cash crops, Needed no slave labor because of this. Slaves were mostly in the south because of the cash crops and long growing seasons.

Northern Colonies way of life Traded furs, pickled beef, and pork. Fishing was key off the coast of New England. Whale fishing for oil lanterns. Ship building was a big way of life for New Englanders.

Apprentice life in the Northern Colonies Lived with their master craftsman and learned from him Promised to work for him for a set number of years. Received food and clothing After time the apprentice would travel and become very skilled in his trade and would become a master craftsman.

Education in the New England Colony children needed to know how to read so they could read the bible. Court ordered a school be founded in every township of 50 families. New England colonies had the best education. Most children stopped their education after the elementary grades.
