G-WADI Y SU PROYECCIÓN EN LATINO-AMERICA Y EL CARIBE (LAC) G-WADI AND ITS PROJECTION IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN (LAC) Ana María Gangas P. Research and Planning Department National Water Agency CHILE

Prospects for G-Wadi in LAC (1) The strategic objective of the G-WADI Network is to strengthen the global capacity to manage the water resources of arid and semi-arid areas; (1) The strategic objective of the G-WADI Network is to strengthen the global capacity to manage the water resources of arid and semi-arid areas; (2) Its primary aim is to build an effective global community through integration of selected existing material from networks, centres, organizations and individuals (3) And to empower local initiatives in LAC in the different thematic areas that G-Wadi works…

Prospects for G-Wadi in LAC Web site To have G-Wadi web site in Spanish language is very important in order to enter the Latin American community, and is the first step to obtain effective communication. (IMTA Mexico) Global rainfall data – it is necessary to diagnose the experiences in the area and to consider which the real use of these instruments is and where and how they are going to be used. Hydrological modeling. Hydrological modeling. the implemented models in this region with little data, sometimes could be an imminent danger, because decisions are invalid or without hydrological backup. One way to enhance this, is through support mechanisms of G-Wadi with expert professionals that teach methodologies to generate basic hydrological information and organize workshops to give orientation about appropriate

Chemical and isotopic tracers. About isotopic tracers there is some experience in the area, which is important to diagnose and further enhance. (Miners and Consultant) Water Harvesting Activity Also exist experience in the area about Water Harvesting. In Chile there are experiences but a University (academic) level. Work with the communities. Examples. Groundwater modeling. In terms of Groundwater modeling it is important to begin in LAC with a diagnosis of state of the art modeling, because there are also applications, but each country has different realities of modeling. Prospects for G-Wadi in LAC

Lines of work in LAC (First propose) The activities to realize in LAC, is proposed follow steps: (1)Start with book-based research into themes of the region. Diagnose the studies of the different G-Wadi themes. (2)Organize workshops to exchange ideas, between different countries as through case studies. (3) Work on the themes at the community level. When should all experts give feedback on their own experiences and methods used by the community? In Latin America and the Caribbean region, this is a crucial point, because the users themselves, through their customs have achieved the lead in terms of methodologies to achieve such an increase in its resources.

Are necessary included themes some how: Desalination, as the countries in LAC have long coastlines, they are already invested and developed, in consequence is necessary understand and learn more about this. Groundwater recharge, as a way to increase available water, against drought, pollution, etc. Water Harvesting, consider experiences of the people, communities, and work with them. Lines of work in LAC (First propose)
