Stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination Welcome to Year 8 PSHCE Stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination

Objectives: To introduce and understand the idea of Stereotypes, Prejudice and Discrimination To begin to consider how Stereotypes, Prejudice and Discrimination affect people’s lives.

What are Stereotypes, Prejudice and Discrimination? Do you have any idea what these words mean? On the whiteboards, try and work out what the words mean. Write down your ideas and hold them up for me to see.

Did you get anywhere near the definitions below? STEREOTYPES – a standard image or idea of a type of person, for example all Muslims are Terrorist. PREJUDICE – an opinion about something, a dislike of a particular race, religion or group E.G – Adolf Hitler and the Jewish people. DISCRIMINATION – to single out a group or person for bad treatment/good treatment on the basis of their religion, race or sex. Write these definitions in your book!

What are Stereotypes, Prejudice and Discrimination? Can you think of any examples of Stereotypes, Prejudice and Discrimination? Working in pairs, write your ideas on your boards. Feedback to the group.

What are Stereotypes, Prejudice and Discrimination? You are going to be given a pack of cards. You are to look at the cards and decide whether the incidents on the cards are STEREOTYPES, PREJUDICE or DISCRIMINATION. What did you decide? On the blank cards, write down your own examples of Stereotypes, Prejudice and Discrimination. Swop with another pair and sort them into the three groups.

What are Stereotypes, Prejudice and Discrimination? Stereotypes, Prejudice and Discrimination are generally bad things. Do you agree? Have you ever been the victim of Stereotype, Prejudice or Discrimination? If you can, share your experiences with the class.

ACTIVITY In your books, design a poster showing how Stereotypes, Prejudice and Discrimination are bad things. Use the ideas we have discussed in our group and add your own. Use pencils and crayons.

Schindler’s List Watch the film carefully. Describe what you see. What kind of behaviour can you observe? On the boards, give five key words to describe how you think the people being shouted at felt. What is happening?

Schindler’s List What you see on the film is RACISM. Racism means treating one group of people less well than another because of their colour, religious belief or ethnic origin. Racism is bad! People who encourage racism usually use lies to encourage racism in others. Can you think of any examples of racism?

Do you know who this is?

This is Stephen Lawrence Stephen Lawrence was killed in a racist attack in 1993. No one has ever been found guilty of his murder, although his family and police believe that they caught the culprits but they were not convicted. This is what RACISM can lead to.

Kicking out Racism Many football clubs have joined the ‘Kick Out Racism’ campaign. They state that the club will not tolerate racism and that it will take action against those supporters involved in racist chanting. Ban supporters involved in racist behaviour. Stop the sale or distribution of racist information around the ground. Discipline players who shout racist abuse. Remove all racist graffiti from the grounds.

Kicking out Racism Draw up an anti racist charter for display in school. In your book, present your rules on a scroll.

Finally… On your boards, write down five things that you have learned today. Discuss them with your partner.
