Racism Progressivism By: Alyssa Bennett, Emma Corcodilos, Jamie Berg and Alessandra Policastro

1900: 10 million African Americans move to America 2/3 lived in the rural south Worked as Sharecroppers and tenant farmers - A tenant farmer who gives a part of each crop as rent. - A person who farms rented land. Many obstacles - Floods ruined fields for crops Southern blacks moved North - 20% of them were urban-dwelling in 1910

Jobs Available During This Time Men in the cities worked in factories, mines, docks, and railroads or became carpenters, plasters, bricklayers Women became servants, seamstresses or worked in laundry or tobacco factories % of black women held jobs in America

Legal Racism Starts Black people were separated from whites in streetcars, trains, schools, parks, public buildings and cemeteries -Referred to as “Jim Crow Law” Supreme Court outlawed Jim Crow Law in 1917 but no one listened and continued excluding blacks Many of them earned 1/3 less money than whites even in the same career and they were prevented from voting

Legal Racism (cont.) Segregation was illegal but it was supported by social pressure and sometimes violence Blacks lived in colored districts They attended dilapidated schools and they worked really low paying jobs Lincoln takes a stand and most blacks voted for republican party (Lincoln) in election Republican leaders only tolerated black politicians who worked in low level patronage jobs and didn’t talk about fundamental issues

The Birth of a Nation D.W. Griffith’s 1915 classic, The Birth of A Nation, glorified the Ku Klux Klan which was a prejudice group who tormented and tortured innocent blacks *Source: gatedimension.blogspot.com

Racism Begins to get Violent In 1906, People who were rioting in Atlanta murdered 4 blacks and burned lots of homes Between over an average of 75 lynches occurred every year - Lynching: A form of murdering, hanging Some lynching involved large crowds watching and bodies being mutilated Authorities did not stop it

Racism Begins to Disappear Republican leaders only tolerated black politicians who worked in low level patronage jobs and didn’t talk about fundamental issues Religious life took place in African Methodist Episcopal Church New jobs emerged for blacks including black owned insurance companies and banks, music, entrepreneurs, teachers, ministers and also lawyers
